Walt's reply:
Mr. Foreman:
Thank you for responding to the call for help. I am forwarding you some
information that one of our compatriots compiled. It contains an over-view
and contact information near the bottom for state and local officials. The
latest info I have is that it's more a State Land Dept. undertaking, ao I'm
advising folks to concentrate letter writting to them in particular. There
is another attachment with their contact info.
At this date, I have personally heard from many reenactment groups from
across the country, that would like to help. I think the letter writing
agenda will be the greatest aid to get this thing turned around. I will also
tell you, that the CWPT( civil war preservation trust) is looking into
purchasing the actual battlefield from the state land trust department,
before it too goes under the developers blade.
I want to personally thank you for anything you or your group could do to
help. It is a great comfort to know that so many folks want to roll up their
sleeves and pitch in. As news develops,I will try to inform each and every
person who contacted me.
Your obedient servant
Walt Nichols

>>Gentlemen,
>> The Union Pacific Railroad is proposing to build a huge freight yard
>>adjacent to Arizona's Picacho Peak State Park. The park includes the site
>>of the westernmost battle of the War for Southern Independence. While the
>>land within the park isn't directly threatened, this huge industrial
>>complex in a rural part of the state will be devastating.
>>
>> Some background information: The battle was fought on 15 April
>>1862 when a Yankee patrol attacked a Confederate picket line protecting
>>the Butterfield Stage Road running northwest from Tucson. While not a
>>strategically significant battle, this battle is important to the history
>>of the Confederacy and the Confederate Territory of Arizona. Further,
>>Yankee Lt. Barrett, one of the Federal casualties in the battle, was
>>buried where he fell. The development of the freight yard threatens his
>>grave site. His grave is in the railroad right of way and the Union
>>Pacific is aware of this fact. The grave was discovered some years ago by
>>a railroad maintenance crew. It is unmarked to protect is from
>>"vandalism" according to a statement issued by the railroad at the time
of
>>the discovery. While Lt. Barrett may be a Yankee, his grave--a grave of
>>an American solider--is threatened with destruction. There were no
>>Confederates killed in the battle.
