If I want to trap a few rabbits, and squirels, where do I start?
What do I need to do to be legal?

First of you will need your regulations to see if it's legal and what methods and equipment you can use.If you are planning on doing this inside city limits you will need to check the city laws also. Most states allow trapping rabbits and squirrels during the regular hunting season or atleast the regular trapping season. Catching rabbit and squirrel is easy, I have problems some years of keeping them out of my traps. Depending on whats legal you have to decide if you want them alive, alive and unhurt or dead when you check your traps.
Alive and unhurt would require a box or cage style trap which you can make or purchase. Havahart makes them just for these animals though expensive.
Just alive you could use the standard foot-hold traps. Depending on the size of your local animals you should do well with #1 single longspring or even #0. If your talking jackrabbit size then a #1 1/2 might be in order. Rabbits and squirrels will fight the trap causing some possible damage to the foot or even loss of the animal from losing a leg.
Dead will require the kill type traps like conibear. Size 120 or 220 would work fine. They make a smaller 110 but unless you are making a drowning set I wouldn't recomend them.
Bait could just be apples. I find the yellow varieties work better because they seem to have more scent then the others. Of course deer, coons, fox ect. like apples as well and may cause you a problem but domestic cats and dogs don't like apples.

Alotta the squirrels around here love to eat the bird seed or even try putting out some sunflower seeds. Um for rabbits lettuce or carrots, or whatever legal bait is approved for your area that your trapping in.
