Sure is a great time to be an Ohio sportsman this time of year. Dove and squirrel started last week along with the early goose season. Deer archery season is right around the corner.
Walleye have really lit up in Lake Erie the last three weeks. Limit catches in 2 hours are the norm. Perch have started to turn on too!
The night air has taken on a certain briskness that makes this my favorite time of the year.

Yep. Looks like it is going to be an early fall too. That means an "Indian Summber" along about the last of November, first part of December. That means deer gun season will suck! So Looks like after Michigan it will be one man camping trips for squirrel, bunny, birdies, and deer scouting.

I can't believe how Ohio changed. When I grew up I lived in Warren County, Deerfield Township. I think I stomped over every foot of ground in that Town and most of it in the Countywith my buddies hunting and fishing. We never saw a deer or even a track, now that area has deer all over, even in the heart of the City. Now I live up here in the frigid North, the land of Taxes and Taxes, New York. New York has a lot ot offer in the way of Big Game, Deer Bear and Turkey, but I would trade it all in a heartbeat for the small game hunting and now Deer in Ohio. You mention a fox squirrel here and they look at you funny like it's a cross between a fox and a squirrel. No Quail, only released pheasants and very few of them, rabbits are way down falling to the coyote population that NY has put a season on and Doves you cant shoot them here. I remember as a kid, the times we went out Rabbit hunting, no dog needed and returned with 5 or 6 bunnies, a few Quail and maybe even a Pheasant. I have to say my fondest memories are that of hunting in Ohio, and it was and still is GOOD TO BE IN OHIO

Changed is right Jerry! I, like you, remember when deer were something from some another land. In my neck of the woods, there were quite a few pheasants, quail, as well as bunnies and squirrel! Now there are alot of deer. Turkeys have even populated the northern part of the state in numbers enough for good hunting. Sad to say though that alot of my old small game hunting grounds have gone into developments, and I haven't seen a wild pheasant around these parts for 20 years. Quail have also disappeared from northern counties.
Another exciting change is the steelhead fishing in the tributaries of lake erie. The fishing the past few years has been nothing short of fantastic. A normal morning will yield 10 - 15 steelhead ranging from 20-33 inches and 6 - 15 pounds. They are a great success story!

Gald to hear the Steelhead are in catchable numbers there. They are spotty here at best in the streams feeding lake ontario. Sometime you hit them right, other time you go all day without a bite.
I know what you mean about the subdivisions going up and taking all the land. I used to live right across the street from what is now the Kings Island Golf course, great bunny and quail hunting there back then. Also where the Amusement park is now, was my friends farm that we used to hunt all the time -- all gone ot the way of progress -- what a shame
