Thanks to the wife and Santa I now have a Savage .17HMR with a USA scope designed especially for the .17HMR. She got a good deal too. She got it from a family friend for $200. Not a bad deal if I do say so myself.

So what are you planning to hunt with it or is it a target gun?

So what are you planning to hunt with it or is it a target gun? I ain't really sure. I figure mostly squirrels, but I will have to make head shots only. From what I have read and heard, the .17 is a lot faster than a .22 and almost expoldes on contact. I have been thinking about getting into predator hunting, so I might use it for that. Or would it be too little?

Not really something to put in the cabinet, but something to go with what is in the cabinet. Santa Granny delivered him a clay thrower and 2 cases of clays. Gotta keep that shot practiced. Martin is tickled.

The .17 will work on anything coyote size or smaller. If others talk about exploding on impact then they are using the wrong bullet but in a sense all bullets expand when they impact, to a point. I have a friend that wants to take a grizzly with his .17. He thinks a head shot will work. He hasn't seen a grizzly skull evidently! It might if he can get the brain through a eye or ear hole but I doubt it would get the job done anywhere else. Atleast before the bear turned it's attention on him.

No sweat plinking varmints to wild hogs with that .17. Heck, I know a fellow who's well known to step outside the law when going hunting, who's already accounted for a few deer (head and neck shots) with his Ruger .17HMR.
Grizzly Mars??? You need to have that feller seek professional help. A good psychiatrist's help that is!
I've been wanting one, just to have it, but I have a .22Hornet that's similar in performance that I adore and unlike the HMR, the Hornet IS legal to use on deer down here.

I have been know to do some crazy things, but to take a grizzly on with a .17 HMR is too crazy for me. I'd worry about one coming after me if I used my .270 or 25-06 let alone a .17.
A man I know told me he puts a rubber glove over his .17's barrel and it makes no sound. I have also heard that a ballon wound work also. Although I ain't planning on doing it, this might come in habdy for future reference. Would that work?

I would think it should cut the sound down to a quiet Phoomph. Works on my Daisy Red Ryder 200 shot BB gun with the compass in the stock when I go bear huntin!

The rubber glove thing workspretty well. Grandpa used to shoot coons and tree rats in town with that method and nobody heard a thing. He called it a low-tech silencer. Also, for hand guns a wide rubber band works the same way.

I haven't priced any yet. The wife wrapped a box of bullets for the .17 and put a note on it about looking back in time. I figured out, without any help, that the rifle was hid behind the grandfather clock. And since I ain't shot up my original bullets yet, I haven't had to price any.

I doubt you can get a five hundred round brick at Wally-World like I can the Remington .22's. One more reason to talk myself out of buying one.
Nope, no nutrias. Little to far south for them, but coons and 'possums fold up quick to my little .22. The .17 is plenty faster than the .22 and ought to leave an itty bitty hole, so less sewing when you go to cash in the hides.

I doubt the rubber glove thing would work or work well. Most of the noise from a rifle shot is from the bullet going at supersonic speeds creating a sonic boom and not from the powder going off.Remove the bullet and fire a cartridge with just powder, like a blank, and you'll hear a definent reduction in noise. I priced a box (50 shells) of .17 HMR's today. They were $6.95 at the local hardware, which is high on almost everything. I figure I could get them cheaper at the pawn shop or the elsewhere.

Ought to work. I got a Chec SKS in 7.62x39 with 2k rounds ball, 1C armor, and 3 C tracer with two 30 round mags. Got a ton of stripper clips for top loading also. Elected those over a 30 round fixed mag. I got a Marlin 9mm carbine with a whole bunch of 9 round mags and Lord knows how much ammo. Naturally these weapons are designed for varmints. Nice to carry a long gun and a hand gun that shoots the same ammo! The rest of my guns are for four legged varmints although the 870 is easily convertible!
