I was shown an old mauser rifle in 8mm. No markings of any kind that I could see. Ramp type rear site that you push up a slide for different ranges. Somebody had removed all the blueing and stripped the stock, all bare metal and wood. I like old bolt actions and this one is in very good shape except for being stripped but I can redo that myself. The question I have is 8mm a decent caliber and can you get ammo for one? And before you ask, the price the guy was asking is $75..

I had a Mauser for awhile. In performance its a shade short of a 30-06......I had this rifle about 10 years ago, and found I always could get ammo for it...Only thing will be that you will have to drill and tap for a scope mount, but the mounts are found readily.....There are plenty of kits around to sporterize it also....$75 is a good price.....I paid $85 about 10 years ago....and I've seen them at double the price too.......

I bought one there at Fort Campbell in 86 for a hundred bucks. It had been converted to 30-06. I straightened the barrel, redid the stock and blued it. When I took it apart I noticed the bedding was extremely tight. It had all been done by carpentry; no glass or putty at all! It was super accurate after reworking it and I sold the finished rifle a couple months later for $200.00 and got even a $20.00 tip from the buyer!! ;D

I found bullets for it and they are fairly common. Big suckers though. I'm not going to put a scope on it. I believe scopes ruin the "lines" of old rifles. I'm more concerned with performance. I very rarely sell a firearm. Mauser actions have a good rep and the caliber seems more than adaquate for deer and black bear. I have a 1903 Springfield which is based on a mauser action but it's in 30.06.

Wasnt 30-06 the caliber of choice by US forces in WW1? I never put a scope on mine, but it was a good hunting rifle....I guess when you know how to shoot it , it becomes very deadly.....for target practise, I used to shoot holes thru a 55 gallon drum, so I could use it for a burn barrel......the round would penetrate thoroughly thru the barrel.....I tried my 30-30, but it was like plinking....I'd create a small hole, but all it did on the other side was catch the lead....never went thru....

I know you guys are going to think that Gary Olen gives me a kickback for plugging for him, but I know he carries 8mm ammo as well as many other kinds from time to time. Check out this link and see how he compares to other suppliers of ammo: www.sportsmansguide.com
