My wife is thinking of getting me a new rifle for Christmas. Any recommendations? It has to not be too expensive but has to be able to harvest anything from a deer to a bear. I'm leaning toward an -06 but kinda thinking about a different caliber. I have a .270 and I like it but like I said I'm thinking of something different. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm leaning toward an -06 but kinda thinking about a different caliber. I have a .270 and I like it but like I said I'm thinking of something different. Any ideas would be appreciated. The .270 is a very good all around hunting calibre so is the 7mm mag. In my opinon this would be the next logical upgrade from the .270. The 7mm mag is a powerhouse but with much milder manners than other mag calibres. Although the 7mm is a magnum the kick back so feared and suffered by many magnum shooters does not exist with the the 7mm mag. This rifle has become over the past years a very popular choice for hunters looking for a firearm that can do it all and quit rightly so. 7mm mag cartridges are available in a large variety of bullet configurations to suit any game animal and any target shooter needs. Being a mag the trajectory is very flatt too. For me this is a big bonus, not having to think about how high or how low to hold once I aim. From point blank to 250 yards you can hold dead center.

Freddie, I think I agree with Othmar. Though the 7MM Mag is a little heavy for the critters we have around here it is getting to point the ol' 06 was in versatility. Considering that you travel once in awhile I think it would be a fine choice...Check out Savage packages that are available. Very reasonably priced and good rifles.

Savage has a reputation of being a good shooter right out of the box, and its not as expensive as some others....I like the "06", I have one and as I see it, it can take any game in North America, and even most thinner skinned animals in Africa....Its also a pretty flat trajectory out to those limits your talking about...and also theres a great diversity of ammo available i most stores thru out the country............

I have a Ruger M77 in .25/06 that I wouldn't part with! Like to use it out West on antelope as its a long flat shooter w/o much recoil...just a BIG bang! Have taken quite a few deer with it also. It really hits hard and the best ammo for me in both my 25/06 and my .308 to use is the Hornady SPBT in 117 grain for the .06 and 165 gr. for the .308. A DEADLY combination! ...Bill......(Come on up and try out my rifle at our Twin Lakes Rifle Range)

Bill, I appreciate the invite but a little too late ;D. I have been having trouble out of my Savage bolt-action .270 (bolt has been jamming and won't open after fired unless a lot of pressure IE. hammer is applied). So i jumped the gun so to speak and bought a Savage 25-06. Took a doe with it opening morning and am impressed with the knock-down power. My shot was at 75 yds. and I hit her in the left shoulder and she fell over back wards and never moved. When I first looked I could not find an entrance wound and no exit wound either. OH, I am shooting 120grain Winchester Supreme silver-tips too. When I cut her open it looked like a hand grenade had went off inside her. Ruined both front shoulders and and a large part of the rib meat. I now know not to hit one in the shoulder with it but in the neck. Another reason I went ahead and bought it was I had my NEW Summit Viper X5 climbing treestand stolen so I thought wife might get me a new stand and I would buy the rifle.

Freddie, My son has a 25-06 Rugar like Bills. He wiped out a small spike at 300 yards a couple of years ago. Later on he took a bobcat at even longer. Nice rifle. I believe the Savage will perform just as well depending on the shooter. Now, be sure to get that 270 to the gunsmiths before you shoot it again.

Brian, Thats my plan. I believe the .270 has a pin in the bolt that is part of the lock that is not operating propery. It would be great if thats all thats wrong. I have found a gunsmith thats not too far from me (about 9 miles) and I will call and make an appointment soon. May also have him put fiber optic iron sights on it and then put my 3X9 Redfield back on with see through mounts. But at the moment I am very impressed with the 25-06. Now if I can talk wife into the climbing stand I want for Christmas I will be in HOG HEAVEN ;D

As I started reading this thread I thought .25-06, then you said you were leaning that way anyhow. It's an awesome gun. I'd look hard at the Ruger #1, single shot.
Or, ever think of a Sharps in .45-120? My next gun!

Freddie, I learned the hard way about hitting a buck in the front shoulders with my 25/06! ::)Couldn't believe the damage it did!! Hit him and he went sideways and didn't move!! I've hit antelope at extreme ranges and knocked them flat! Its a great rifle but don't hit the shoulders or hams! :'(Bill

Bill, I agree. I thought my .270 did the damage but this 25-06 is awesome. I sure did ruin a lot of meat though ;D

I have been trying to figure out what I would do with a Sharps .45-120. From what I can recall that gun can shoot at ranges up to 1/2 mile and still hold true. I'm lucky to be able to see that far on flat ground. Where I hunt though the shots are usually under 200 yards so a .45-120 would just be too much gun. And when you hit something like a deer, it would be 10 times worst than a 25-06. ;D

When i was a kid there used to be an old Drilling in the gun cabnet it was a 10ga sxs with a .50-100 on top...it had a peep sight that was attachet to the stock and in a compartment in the stock (like a patch box) was a clip on front sight...My uncle used to say it was the only caliber ever designed for "barking" a buffalo ;D ;D now that would do some meat damage....even if you missed to my way of thinking ;D

I have decided I like the 25-06. I went out this morning after work ( left the house around 7) and drove about 10 miles of dirt road to where I wanted to hunt. Since someone was in my favorite spot I decided to walk down a logging road and look over a clear-cut towards the treeline and see if anything came out. Before I walked 200 yards i saw a doe cross the road. I dropped to my knees and saw a buck behind her. I fired and missed. The buck was dumb I guess because he ran toward me and then turned broadside to me. I shot again and knocked him down. Dumb me had allowed my new rifle to be out of shells so I started to reload. As I did he got up and ran down in a gully in the clearcut. I reloaded and followed his blood trail and about 100 yards away found a nice 9 point. So I have decided I like the new 25-06 ;D
