Dad's been having trouble with his eyes and couldn't focus on his iron sights like he used to, but wanted to get the old Winchester 94 out of the cabinet for a little shooting.
What he did was put an aftermarket, flip up peep sight on it. It works like a charm! He figured that's all he shot back in the military and he shoots great through a peep on his bow string, so he did it and the old Winchester's shooting tight. He also bought a box of Hornady's 160 gr. Leverevolution cartridges and coupled with the peep sight he's getting five inch groups at TWO HUNDRED YARDS!!!!
He like the results of the peep so well, he's ordered one for his black powder rifle, since he refuses to put a scope on a BP gun.
I've ordered a peep for my BP too!
Ya'll ever think you might need an alternative to iron sights, but don't want to step up to a scope, you might want to give it a try.

Toby, I was waiting for some results to start filtering in with them Hornadys....Now I gotta go out to buy some too.....Which grain did he buy, or are there still 150 and 170 gr for the 30-30....Had mine for about 40 years now and love the rifle....I have fiber-optics on my 30-30 as well as on my BP rifle I use for hunting....That helped me alot, but that peep sounds interesting.....Who was the manufacturer and what did it cost, and of course was there any gunsmithing involved? ??

He ordered it via E-bay for forty bucks and installed it himself. It's a Winchester Tang Sight by Winchester.
The Hornady's are 160gr. and the polymer tip is definitely the way to go. The gun used to group four inch groups at seventy five yards, but now you can cover five sho0ts with your had all the way out to two hundred. That ol' gun just got a whole lot more respect!
Now, he says he wants to find one of the large loop levers like the Duke used to carry. Second childhood maybe? ;D

Yoou know as my Dad's sight faded from gloucoma he slowly got to a tunnel vision phase. He loved them peep sites. As his tunnel got smaller, he eventually went to straight open or sometimes no sights at all. Got the town and local state cops all upset because he used his tunnel vision like a peep and out shot them regularly with their own weapons. The major problem Dad had was getting his eyes locked on a target. That meant when you came in late at night after a date you made sure you spoke to Dad ALL the way in until he knew it was you. He took out a couple of steers and rock salted a bunch of water melon stealers in the garden over the years. Almost got me one night as I snuck through the front door too. You know, I think that ear is STILL deafer than the other......
