I'm getting ready to apply for my CCW. The lonly genuine reason I can offer is to be prepared to protect myself and/or others. None of the weapons I currently own are appropriate for concealment, comfort, quick action or highly dependable accuracy. Given those constraints and adding assured stopping power; what would you recommend for my concealed weapons, primary and back up?

Phill,
North American Arms makes a derringer type, 5 shot 22 mag that fits in either your front or rear pocket. They also make a holster for it that fits on a belt. I bet out of every permit holder in this area most have one.
I doubt it is a killer but most definitely would be a deterrent. Makes a hell of noise when it goes off. Probably not very accurate at any distance but then you usually want something for close range anyway.
Fairly inexpensive to buy too.
Just a thought.

Thanks Rich. I'll remember not to play poker when I visit down there!

Oh, don't worry about that little weapon. When I play poker I always lay a sawed off on the table. Really keeps everyone honest ;D

Paws,
Look into the compact 45 autos or hey even the Lady Smith .357mag (which is the wife's gun but it sure does carry well) the other gun I use for primary carry is the Sig Saure P220 in a shoulder holster, it's a bit heavy but it is a real good feeling knowing it's there...I also have a compact 9mm S&W belly gun that, if the wife insists on carring her own, I'll carry if it's to warm for a jacket...

Phil I believe the Ohio CC laws only cover the weapon that you quialify with. If your going to carry something, carry something that will do the job. Any of the mid size Semi auto's 9MM and up are fine, so are the revolvers 38, 357 or 44 spcl. Most police agecies ( all in NY ) are getting away from the 9mm and going to either the .40 S&W or the .45ACP. I carry a Glock 23 which is the mid size .40 and it conceals very well in either my shoulder holster or high ride hip holster.

That Springfield 1911 is a real nice piece of Iron. A friend of mine is on a -- lets Say a Federal Swat Team and they now carry a special built 1911 Springfield in the 45 acp. I have shot his gun several times and although im no match for him, that gun produces some great groups. I considered getting one, but decided to stay with the glock 23 for concealibility reasons.

Thanks all. Yes Jerry I had heard that rumor! It is so scattered right now what is and isn't legal it is pathetic. Virtually up to every county to determine what training is required and the Sheriff is the Czar of what qualifies and does not qualify. That's why I was waiting figuring something a little more firm than Jello would appear. I think I will settle on a SW 357 wheel gun of some sort.

Good choice Phil, S & W makes several in stainless, but they are a bit pricey new, The Lady Smith 60 LS 2 1/8" bbl. goes for around 620.00, the same gun in blue goes for 568.00. The model 60 with a 3" bbl goes for 620.00. Youre much better off if you can find a good used one, which should be in the 300 to 450.00 price range. I hear that at that Machine gun shoot in KY, there are many dealers there and you can get a pretty good price on almost any gun your looking for.

I'm wondering if I need to get a bull barrel. The training requires firing 200 rounds plus 12 hours .

Since I got my two small(short) revolvers last year I have fired appx. 100 rounds thru each with NO problems. My S&W .38Spl shoots high at 25 yards so I aim at the targets privates to hit in the upper chest ;D :DA bull bb. is nice but its also heavy and hard to conceal. It all depends on you and what you want to do with it. I've fired hundreds of rounds thru a Ruger S.S. .357 and it still works and looks like new(6" bbl) Its big and HEAVY!! But I sure like it and carry it with me in the woods.....Bill

If your looking for a great compromise in the hand guns Phil see if the dealers by you can locate an older model 60 with a 3" bbl, Square Butt. This model was a .38 Special +P with fixed sights. It has a semi bull barrel, very easy to conceal, and accurate. I carried one on the job for a good number of years in either an ankle holster as my back up, or in a high ride hip holster. I would have to say that I fired someplace in the area of over 1000 rounds of +P ammo through it over the years and never had a problem with it. The new model 60 now comes in a .357 and it has adjustable sights.

I'll do that Jerry! I'm going shopping today or tomorrow. Wasgoing to get a new riding lawn mower but after looking in the mirror decided on a self propelled walk behind so I might have enough left for a decent hand gun!! ;D Still got to replace my camera lost in Idaho so I can get some pictures up and get my cook book started.

The only handgun I have is the Hi-Point .40 I bought new for $139 last year. I would be their spokesman if they ever asked. The gun has performed flawlessly with over 1750 rounds through it and no problems. The only drawback is that it is heavier than most. If anyone ever badmouths the brand, I'd have to wonder if they ever had one and gave it a chance.

I bad mouth them regularly. Never owned one, but shot a few and repaired about a million. Most of the ones I had to repair were brand spankin' new with less than a box of rounds fired in them. Consider yourself lucky to have one that works. I have nothing against you or your choice, but I am one that doesn't "appreciate" the brand. Incidentally, they are extra heavy because they have to have extra metal and plastic to keep them from battering themselves to death due to sloppy fitted parts and/or poor springs. The added slide weight helps cushion the recoil and the added frame material to absorb the pounding creates more weight.

Bump; This thread is too cool to let sitting around so long. I have a Taurus M94 .22LR with a 4" bbl and rubber grip, TC Contender .41 mag with super 14" bbl and red dot sight, and Ruger Super Bisley .44 mag. On the wish list is a S&W 625 .45 ACP, and a Dan Wesson .357. Shiloh, I just can't imagine you owning a .25 auto. It just seems really out of character for you. Through reading all your posts out there, I've gleaned that you're a revolver fan, and I'm under the impression you like a big bore. I don't know.....the Shiloh my imagination has generated shuns a .25........it just seems weird. So, what do you do with that thing?

I would never buy one. It was given to me as a box-o-gun by the old gun store I was working through when they closed. They found it and had no idea when they got it or from whom. They just handed it to me so I took it home and pieced it together. The owner of that store also gave me his own Browning .25 "Baby Browning" to repair. I haven't done that yet, but figure I'll wind up with that one eventually myself as well. I figure if I ever need a .25 auto for personal protection, I can load it up with hot rounds, load it into the 6-pounder and fire the entire gun down-range. ;D ;D Does THAT sound like the Shiloh you imagined?
