Okay, I've got this new Ruger Mark III Hunter with the fluted, stainless steel barrel. Really like it but am considering putting some kind of scope on it. Am looking for suggestions. Fixed power, variable power, red dot or holosight. Will be using it mostly for plinking and for tree rats. Money is not a big problem but is definitely a little problem. So, whatever I get has to be reasonable. Tell me what you think and why?

I'd go with a fixed 2x with a post reticle. Unless you plan on doing some "long" range shooting a variable shouldn't be needed. I believe most of your shots will be less then fifty yards so there's no need to fiddle with adjusting the scope. The post sight will make it easier to target the squirrels who will be moving both horizontally and vertically so the post won't be blocking your view of the squirrel as it moves like crosshairs would.

Mars, Good idea. I never considered the cross hairs getting in the way of my view. But, you are right. The 2x should help me see a little better too. I've got a Millet red dot on my 44 mag and I really like it but am still not sure if that's the way I want to go on the 22. I'm wondering if they make a 2x red dot? ?? Rich

Since you have one, I'd try the Red dot on it's lowest setting and point it at a squirrel and see if the dot doesn't cover the whole squirrel at different ranges. ( you could use a mounted squirrel for this) I suspect it will or most of it anyway except at a real close range. If it doesn't though it should work pretty good otherwise. I think they do come in a 2x as well.
