As I read about all of the things going on with China, the Olympics and Tibet, I couldn’t help but to think that I must be experiencing déjà vu. I did a quick search on the internet for Berlin Olympics and found an article at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?ModuleId=10005680
Below is the introduction for the article and below that is a version to draw parallels between past events and possible outcome.
NAZI OLYMPICS, BERLIN 1936
INTRODUCTION
For two weeks in August 1936, Adolf Hitler's Nazi dictatorship camouflaged its racist, militaristic character while hosting the Summer Olympics. Softpedaling its antisemitic agenda and plans for territorial expansion, the regime exploited the Games to bedazzle many foreign spectators and journalists with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany. Having rejected a proposed boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the United States and other western democracies missed the opportunity to take a stand that--some observers at the time claimed--might have given Hitler pause and bolstered international resistance to Nazi tyranny. With the conclusion of the Games, Germany's expansionist policies and the persecution of Jews and other "enemies of the state" accelerated, culminating in World War II and the Holocaust.
CHINA OLYMPICS, BEIJING 2008
INTRODUCTION
For two weeks in August 2008, Hu Jintao’s Communist dictatorship camouflaged its racist, militaristic character while hosting the Summer Olympics. Softpedaling its atheist agenda and plans for territorial expansion, the regime exploited the Games to bedazzle many foreign spectators and journalists with an image of a peaceful, tolerant China. Having rejected a proposed boycott of the 2008 Olympics, the United States and other western democracies missed the opportunity to take a stand that--some observers at the time claimed--might have given Jintao pause and bolstered international resistance to Chinese tyranny. With the conclusion of the Games, China’s expansionist policies and the persecution of Tibetan and other "enemies of the state" accelerated, culminating in World War III and another Holocaust.
