I feel much better now. Hey you want to drive up toward Cleveland on the fourth and fifth to show folk how to cook in a Dutch Oven? Some gal up there lost her demonstrator and needs a replacement. No fee as far as I know but the gal who was going to do it was also going to sell pie which they say is OK. (Probably not squirrel pie, or fuzzy tail pie.) You want to do it and have the time I'll foot your gas and meals and one night stay up there for you. It is about 250 miles. If you and KJ can do it together I'll foot both your meals and room. Let me know real quick.

Hey, thanks for thinking of me. I'd love to do something like this with this crew, especially Faith, but I can't do the city thing. We could always arrange to do a demo out here on the hill though. kj

Chunked up spuds, carrots, celery, and onion seasoned with sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper, dessicated garlic, butter and all boiled in water and mounted with butter and cream. Oh yeah, tater soup.

Sorry. Since I now have one boy gainfully employed, I have to drive him to work 3-4 times a week. He pays me for gas, a coke, and an occasional pack of smokes. I don't have to pay $400 for his drivers ed, his permit or out-of-orbit insurance premiums for having a kid on my policy, or the upkeep, gas and repair on another rust bucket in the driveway. Let him figure out how to EARN the driving privilage!!
What we need to do is have one of these functions down here in the hills!

I totally agree about having one of these functions down here...we might even be able to make a few bucks selling some of our various goodies.
If OCC decides they want to host something down in these hills keep in mind that The Broadwell Hill Learning Center is also available: 65 acres of deep private undeveloped woods with easy to rugged rated trails, places to camp, and a campfire geared toward gatherings.
Folks could even try their hand at fishing for the big cats, or the wiley bass, and then explore the various ways to cook them up on the campfire, DO, etc.
You can see a pic of the place at
www.broadwellhill.org but I really just need to schedule another picnic so folks within range can come check it out in person.
Plus, I'm getting a hankering for some more of that Athens' Own dry aged steak grilled over the fire and the weather is going to be turnin' pretty soon.
I'll take a look at the calendar and let you know some ideas.
Constantine and I have a date to go on an extended woods wander this afternoon. yipppy! kj

You know that doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. Might be we could Tri-Sponser something! How is your parking situation there? Wonder if we could draw folk in there just for the sake of their own personal entertainment? Would need a little newspaper advertisement maybe on a couple of radio stations too. Might it be posible to invite the Raiders for a little cannon action too? Play with this and see what you think we might be able to do.

Now you've got me kicking myself in the pants for not thinking this up sooner in the year. This is a fun way to incorporate autumn leaf viewing and hunting season with something educational, entertaining and belly filling. Just wish the idea had come sooner so we could get word spread.
Supper: BBQ pulled pork, mashed taters and corn.

Broadwell Hill Campfire Cookout and Demo Event Planning Chat
How about Saturday, October, the 4th (the first Sa of the month)?
You guys could roll in sometime after noon, we could entertain ourselves, Constantine will arrive around 4 pm (after the farmers market) and we could eat round 5-6 pm.
It would be great if you guys could come out early, just let me know an ETA so I can have the gate open.
We could take a walk, check out the projects, the solar, battery storage, water, etc., and the dome/futon.
Hahaha...actually the dome is big enough for lots of bodies to stretch out and roll around
I used to live in the tipi where the dome sits now. But the canvas became so worn I couldn't repair it anymore so it was offered to the fire.
When my son and his family were coming to visit last year I decided to invest in the dome as another shelter on the land.
It's pretty cool and so far I'm pleased. I'll send a picture to Paws and maybe he can post it; you can also check out
www.shelter-systems.com A futon is simply a type of cotton batting bed, orginated in Japan I think. It's on a frame that can be flat for a bed or folded for a couch .
If you stay the night you won't have to try to get out of here before dark...and we'll rouse you with coffee and breakfast in the morn.
Our campfire cooking area is pretty rugged: fire on the ground, blocks with a grill on top. So if we're going to do a demo we may want to talk about some improvement strategies.
We could also take a woods wander, kids could go fishin', etc. We've got some fishin' poles around here but they're not the best, may want to bring your own if you want to drop a line.
I'll get in touch with the buddy with the kids who your kids know from Fed Hock schools. He plays in a band and he frequently has gigs on Saturdays. I'll let him know immediately about the tentative date for the 4th and keep my fingers crossed.
hope you all have a great day! kj

Sounds great. Lots of space for parking along the driveway and even the road if a lot of folks show up. Usually have folks drive into the main homestead area to drop passengers and stuff and then return to park their cars in a fashion that doesn't block the driveway. I've had volunteers handle parking duties in the past and used to have that sweet electric golf cart to shuttle folks.
Yep, we could do some PR on the radio stations, get it posted on the tourism web site and get the word out in other ways. It's always been a fantasy of mine to host workshops out here; also fits in with my efforts to promote what is be called the Great Reskilling.
The cannon action sounds like a ton of fun but you'll have to check out the site to see if there's enough room...I'm situated in a relatively small opening in the midst of deep woods. Might be able to aim it in such a way that the cannons could fly across the pond, as long as they don't hit the dome
Be a great way to let my neighbors know I'm serious about security Actually, it would be nice to invite them to come over for viddles and maybe get them to share some campfire stories about the history of these woods.
Also, just remembered my huntin' /trappin' neighbor from up north is going to be visiting his land the first weekend of October. I bet he'd love to come down and chill out with folks as well.

Don't kick yourself too hard, I also think we have plenty of time to get the word out about an early to mid- November demo event. We will have to scramble a bit but if we split up tasks, delegation, shouldn't be a problem. We could look at it as an emergency response drill.
Seems the trees are changing sooner than usual but if we get some rain the autumn viewing may still be good.
How's such a date fit in with hunting season dates? Seems it would be bow season. Doesn't gun season usually open right after Thanksgiving? (I have a booklet round here somewhere with such dates.) Anyways, still a good time since some of the other out-of-area landowners/hunters often start coming down to get ready for the gun season. (Once gun season opens it's a good idea to keep the 'public' out of the woods around here.)
Sounds Fun! I'm excited about such an event being held here but don't hold your tongue if you don't think this site will work well. Hosting it at Stroud's would also be fun.
Could one of you rough out a draft flyer or PR blurb with your description of such an event. I've never been to a DO demo or anything similiar before so wouldn't know how to describe it.

While you have your fingers crossed, I'll have mine crossed that Martin isn't working that weekend. You know how it is being a newbie at work. You don't have the privilage of asking for days off yet. Also depends on if there is gas in the tank when I'm ready to pull out of the driveway. Lana, our daughter is back in KY with her grandma. Hopefully sticking to her lessons and getting a j-o-b. Rob I never know about. He's a fart in a hurricane. But, of course the boys are getting old enough to leave home alone for an evening. Maybe mom could have a day with no kids?!? I don't think they'll burn the house down or kill each other. Would just feel better coming home at night, though, since there's no phone at the house in case there was is an emergency. Sure you understand.

Sorry we can't have a hippie camp-out, maybe another time.
But we can move dinner up...Constantine said he's willing to adapt his delivery schedule and get back here by 3 pm. If we get the other vittles together and have the fire ready for steak we should be able to eat by 330 or 4 pm.
will that work?
I know there are other variables so will continue to keep my fingers crossed...can we contribute some pennies for the gas tank?

Just checked in with the kitchen crew. Looks like lunch meat and veggie platters with coffee and cookies for supper.
Tomorrow night is bologna salad sandwiches and a relish tray with the cookies (if there's any left - I don't think I baked enough) and coffee.
Friday night is whatever leftovers we have. Crowd is usually small because of HS football games.
Let's just wait and see on the gas thing. I'll try to squeeze a couple bucks out of the son's first paycheck first. He's gotta start paying his keep.

Paws,
Yep that is stew!
As I type I have a meatloaf I put together from a recipe
from the Montgomery Inn. You can move this where it belongs.
Ingredients:
2# ground chuck
2 medium onions,finely chopped
Salt to taste
Ditto to black pepper
2 eggs
4 slices white bread,crust removed,soaked and
drained in cold water
1/2 cup Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce
1/2 tsp. mustard
Pre-heat oven to 500degrees
Combine all ingredients thoroughly, and form into two loaves
Place in shallow baking pan.
Lower oven to 385 degrees and place meatloaf in oven
bake 45/60 minutes occasionally basting with juice from
bottom of pan.
Mrs snake will have it for dinner tonite, and I will have it for lunch
tomarrow
ENJOY

I have asked ODOE for authority to represent that group at the 4 October Meeting. Now we need to put together an agenda for the meeting to make the event as complete as possible I will start:
1. Select an event date.
2. Determine Event activities.
3. Determine advertising constraints and resources and appoint responsibles.
4. Determine follow-up contact and review proedures.
5.Determine progress measures and performance follow-up actions.
