Thanks for having me KJ and Noodles! Had great time. Thank You! Yes, I had a splendid time as well, so nice to meet ya'll in person. All the food was terrifie, especially that fresh green salad. Did you notice I filled my plate three times with that stuff? Yep, good stuff. I keep thinking those greens are going to be bitter due to the drought but that batch of lettuce seems to hold up amazingly well. Gonna have to collect some seed from those plants. Next was the bread and fresh butter and then the steak of course. Really refreshing to have beef that tastes like beef. Yeah, it was an oh, my gawd experience. Then comes in the pasta salad and the squash. The squash would have rated higher but it was the only thing I had that was good for me and was allowed to have! So, how come that was the only thing you were technically allowed to have on that spread? Wouldn't all those complex sugars play havoc with your blood sugars (BS), not to mention the Sticky Petes' Maple Syrup and the cranberries? Seems the biggest challenge to your BS would have been the fact you consumed three plate-fulls I was really pleased with how the little prototype oven worked for the squash; worked a lot better than just throwing them in the fire. Then comes the coffee and finally that beer. Wow! what else can I say. That stuff will knock you on your butt before you have any idea what happened! Yeah, and we did really good; no one fell over, dove in the fire or took a dip in the pond. Thought I might have to block you from running off the cliff wall but we handled that well and didn't even have to go get the wench. ;D Ahh...and those gone-wild apples, wild persimmons and wild grapes that Faith & Mike brought were amazing. I loved the appearance of the table with the fruits in the beautiful baskets. And, the fruit was soooo good. I'm hoping I might be able to get those persimmon seeds to grow. If not, I need to round up some little trees and get some more growing around here. If you guys are willing, I am willing so if you want to do it let us do the DOG. Might be thin on participants but at least it will be fun and if we can get foru or five "ringers" cooking then at least we'll have a good meal. KJ remember what we were talking about doing a progressive dinner? Why not do it around the firepits working from appetizer to dessert along with the wisdom of a walking tour. "Theme up" each stop for a little edumacation and some history of the property and development. So what do you think? Edumaction. There you go using those big words again...had to look it up... To talk good words; good talkings. Cool, thanks for the gift to the vocabulary! I think it sounds fabulous; like a dream come true. Seems I primarily need a date so I can round up some help and get the campfire rings set up. There's also a campfire ring up by the bus; the gate keeper ring. I'd need to mow and clean the area up; but it might serve as a nice meet & greet appetizer starting point and a place to introduce and acclimate folks to the woods (spose it might be too far from the main loop though). I could also help with some PR if it's needed. It would be great to get the word out to the local folk, round up some venison, and use other local foods as much as possible. We've got some buddies who have a bluegrassy type band; maybe they'd like to come up and do some pickin' in exchange for some food Anyways, there's a few decisions to be made and a bit of work to be done. I feel better knowing the plan, knowing who's doing what, etc., but it seems that you are used to pulling this sort of thing together so I'll take your lead. Are you game? If so, how would you like to proceed? Sounds like a great idea worthy of pursuit! Give me a call if you want to flesh out the plan, delegate out some tasks and get this rolling.

OK well I pressed the throttle on this train so "toot toot", lets do it the last Saturday before Thanksgiving Day week-end. That will give us an excuse to have a spread, tie it in with the transh can turkey which we can use as focus for advertising, and potentially pick up some out of town visitors taking an end of year vacation for turkey day with the family. We might even still have some leaf cover to ogle at. How many fire pits do you have there ready built? I will volunteer to do the most of the leg work in organization, planning,, and other hands off efforts so you don't give Noodles too many assignments. Once we decide how many fire pits we have we can plan a "X" course walking menu, set up a demo area DO demonstrators not incorporated in the planning and that is wehere we can do a "demo-perf" lesson for those who wish to learn how. We need at least a horse doover, soup, slalad, several breads, a minimum of two entree's and probably ought have at least one of them be wild or native, some desserts, and a "pair of teef" to eat it all with. Mike needs a pair, Faith needs a pair, and I might need some "fill ins!" By the way, where was this "Wench" we never did have to get? I disn't see her anywhere. Yes maam theose fruits the Brittons brought were out of sight! Only thing missing there was the cornu.., corna..,corni..; horn of plenty for display! That bread is "kick ass". Oddly enough KJ it is being discovered that excluding complex carbs is not a gold thing for diabetics. The better idea is a "well balanced" diet which includes highly complex carbs like provided by the suash and other goodies it was cooked with. Protein and fiber added makes the meal ideal for a diabetic and that is why I added so much of the greenie salad and only a tad of the pasta salad which I loved. Pasta carbs are better for the bod normally than bread carbs so I made a decision to trade the bread for the pasta. Over the hour or so taken for dinner I had approximately 70 grams of carbs, high but OK for that duration, four servings of meat, 2 of fats, 6 servings of carbs, 2 fruit, (member my roasted apple), 2 vegie and probably 5 or 6 grams of fiber. Calorie wise it was in the neighborhood of 900 calories or three hundred less than a Big Mac! Bounce that off your charts and see how it does! We absolutely "Must" do that bread in the Dutch oven, maybe twelve or fifteen times! Mad Jack, if you are listening; wanna come play with us?

Howdy everybody. Finally making it back on here. Mike and I sure did have a great time with y'all. kj, noodles...Thanks so much for your hospitality, great vittles, thinking points, and for putting up with us. Paws......... "That's ENOUGH!" ;D How many gallons do I owe you? Elderberry right? I'd be willing to do the DOG walking tour - progressive dinner - what have you. Would have to do it as a loner though 'cause Mike would be gone. Just a thought on doing breads though. Unless, I can come up with some kind of sturdy table, or at minimum a large cutting board on a milk crate to knead on, it might be easier to do a quick bread like pumpkin bread or cranberry-orange bread, or maybe simple cornbread or biscuits. Not that I'd love to do some yeast bread, it's just that those recipes can tend to pick up a peculiar woodsy flavor and texture this time of year if you're not careful. ;D Just keep me up to par if you don't see me on here. And BTW Paws.... I don't need teefers. Mine fit fine if I use enough goop. Mike's are still in the back of the linen closet. ;D

OK well I pressed the throttle on this train so "toot toot", lets do it the last Saturday before Thanksgiving Day week-end. Rock-n-Roll...Saturday, November 22 We best put in our good weather wishes and keep our fingers crossed How many fire pits do you have there ready built? 1. gate keeper fire ring by the bus 2. main fire ring by the house, with the heavy duty table/cutting board...might be a good place to situate Faith. 3. Point Campground fire ring 4. Old dome fire ring; I stole the rocks for the gate ring but could bring it back to life. 5. Fire ring near the old sweat lodge There's a fire ring in the cave but me thinks that would be too rugged and remote for this here event. There are also other areas along the loop trail that could accomodate small cook fires. Fire safety and forest fire precautions are really important...especially if we dont' get much rain. Wish list...fire extinguishers, chairs/benches, an electric golf cart to ferry folks, food, supplies. Volunteers to help with parking, etc. If folks are bringing kids we need someone monitoring the pond. No dogs please, ain't got no fleas out here yet and don't want em. I'll check in with my insurance buddy, might need folks to sign a waiver of liability as they roll in. I'll try to get some signage up around the pond and the rock cliffs. I will volunteer to do the most of the leg work in organization, planning,, and other hands off efforts so you don't give Noodles too many assignments. Sweet. hahahaha...Noodles might not even be able to be here until 3-4 pm again due to Saturday Farmers Market activities. I've got a neighbor fellow coming up to do some chores so I can hire him to work on campfire ring clean up duties. Course, soon as I do that the leaves will all come down and I'll be back to square one...but at least with a head start. What the heck is a horse doover??? Oddly enough KJ it is being discovered that excluding complex carbs is not a gold thing for diabetics. Nahhh...you know better than that. I know complex carbs are a good thing, that the ticket is a balanced diet. That's why I was wondering why you thought the squash was the only allowable thing on the spread. Thanks for sharing your dietary processing though...it's great!!! Did you check your BS when you got home? Please share any PR announcements, fliers, etc., so I can forward and post them around here. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to be of use.

OK then let's roll. Horse doovers are thos little bits of things on a cracker! No I didn't check my sugar but my new blood pressure gizmo was in the mail and I had 128/80 versus 178/150 at the VA clinic after I waited an hour for my appointment!

Are we gonna try to form a menu of some kind as to form a meal, or are we doing this on the whim? What the heck is a horse doover??? Uh, well, I thought a horse doover was what I've been trying to collect from the town parking lots. Y'know, if they're dry enough, they make wonderful fire starters. Went over to the bulk pantry this morning and picked up 3# yeast. I'll get the flour next weekend. If I have too much flour in the house at any given time, I have a tendency to turn it all into cookies and brownies. That and I don't particularly care for weevil floaters. Yes, them weevil are extra protein. But, ew.

<<<<<<<<<There's a reason that thar picture is cropped the way it is. I've got a Pearl Bailey butt. Remember her chocolate chip cookie commercial that was on TV several years ago: "The lumpy bumpy best"? Well that describes what you don't see. ;D

Now Faith I was not even thinking of that I was thinking of cookies and brownies
I understand what you are getting at though. If all those cookies and brownies are sitting around you will eat them and they go right to your behind.

We probably ought to put a menu together for "feeding ourselves" purposes as well as planning. For advertising lets leave it open. I would really like us to do a trash can turkey since it is so close to Thanksgiving. That might leave it open to a Holiday menu of sorts if you folk all agree. Think we ought to put a theme in the ads? For advertising I was thinking of asking ODOE to publish the event and schedule with their contacts/members, Papa Dutch, asking the members here to publish on their web sites, put an ad in the Athens Messenger and on WAIS/WSEO radio and maybe the Nelsonville Cable. Comments, suggestions, discussion? Faith no problem with tables. I have two really sturdy ones and a couple folders that are substantial as well. I would like to have something on the radio the first week of November daily then maybe weekend ads in the paper through the Sunday before with notice to internet folk as quickly as possible with lots of follow-up.

Hi ya folks! Welcome welcome to newcomers! It's a lovely day in the neighborhood around here! I've been out cleaning up the trails and campfire rings. Any ideas for bread (or other baked goodies)? Fall themed possibilities: Persimmon bread (there's a big bag of 'em in the freezer) Pumpkin bread ( I still have that recipe that makes 20-some loaves) Cornbread Raised rolls (whole grain, straight, sweet, or savory) Buttermilk biscuits Give me some ideas!! For that trash can bird.....who's assigned to shooting it?? An idea for the theme, "A Recession/Depression-Proof, Indigenous, Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner". Meaning we beg, borrow, barter, steal, dumpster dive, hunt or scavenge for all the ingredients. But by no means can we spend money.

I'm not opposed to using a wild bird but foretell some tactical difficulties. Too scrawny for a big group if a big group should show up, too lean to roast vertical without really dogging it up and then still the wings and legs will probably char but that can be pvercome. I'd sooner get a couple big domestic hens with lots of breast, still talking about turkeys, and do them. ( Might still be talking about turkeys here now.) I'll buy them but where do I get the trash cans? By the way, TT chime in here! As a matter of fact you might want to come on down and show us how it is done! Tell me about key points to watch out for. How closely do they need to be attended? Stuff like that. Man I'm happy with most any kind of bread. Quick breads, sour dough breads, and yeast breads are all great and better when done out of doors. I'm a smorgasboard dude; rather have a selection than just a single choice. (Probably why I can't stay married!) So if I do turkey and Faith does breads what else do we need? Oh, got to have dressing, probably a couple varieties. Need gord or squash dishes. Pies? Salads? Spuds? Beans? End of garden stew or something like that? Hey, let me do meat OK? I'll get the turkeys, a pork shoulder for pulled pork and some chickens for stocks, chicken N noodles and such. I'll also make the noodles unless Noodles wants to make the noodles! Now member we still need to acomodate Athens' Own cheese, beef, milk and coffee products via sample, personal use and sales displays. Chime in here Noodles. We get a lasso around this and I can write announcements.

I'd sooner get a couple big domestic hens with lots of breast, I pictured you going for the imported hens from Aisa or maybe Sweden! ;D DAM! I sent ours to the scrap yard last week. If I remember, there's a True Value hardware in Athens. That's where ours came from. From our experience, after the first 45 minutes, it's too late to decide to make a run into town for forgotten supplies. Sounds lilke someone needs to make a trip to the Heiner's store. While you're over there, tell them they need to open up a shop in either Oak Hill or South Webster. Hows about squash soup. Uh, you (or at least I) don't eat gourds. I've got a bushel of gala and mcintosh apples gave to me. If I can hold them that long, we could use them, some aged cheddar and that dried fruit kj sent home in a pie or crisp. Oh gosh, that sounds good. Think I'll go home and make one up for lunch!

Don't start that crap! After listening to that old Arkansian fogie I went and fixed a big pan of SOS and scrambled eggs for breakfast! I'll check on ash cans then at True Value. Hey, maybe Lowes! (I got a dandy colupon for Lowes!) Heiners? You are on your own. My ex-step brother-in-law is the manager and we ain't on speakin' terms. Faith we need white bread for sure, maybe Boston brown, maybe rolls or biscuits, you choose!

Sorry, I was not able to come last Saturday... This is what I am willing to add to the event. Four pumpkin pies..whipped cream, yea or not...fresh would be great...no time here to make it...Cool Whip is the best I can do. Two Dutch Apple...I think they would probably be better than mincemeat? The mincemeat will have to be from the grocery?? Or an other ideas? I make an Oatmeal pie that my daughter and her family loves...it is an oldy from my Grandma...she lives to be 101 yrs. young!! Thirty Day Fruit Cake which if I get it started this evening or tomorrow after church I can probably get at least four loaf pans if not more. It is made from a starter and I have plenty. Oyster stuffing for one of Paw's turkeys. Making apple butter over the open fire and I will bring samples for crackers or whatever? Paws suggested crackers for Noodles cheeses. I found some at Sam's Club that are made w/o gluten? kj and Faith can either of you think of anything that may be helpful. I am hoping someone...aka Paws finds a DO to cook the Apple Butter in and a hockey stick for a stirrer I am no longer in nursing, but what a switch to Mental Health...this profession is getting really rough with so many drugs of all types. I had a couple last week that are shooting Heroin...so very young!! Welcome to any suggestions!!

Told ya! I didn't even make it all the way to supper. This was breakfast with the SOS made from ground bison and served over sliced and toasted French bread. Yummy. No eaglenest starts with pies, and stuffing and apple butter; OH my! That sounds like a feast there . I got a DO and tripod but I do not know about a hockey stick. I'll see what I can find at Wally World. (If this was 1960, I'd just run over to Court Street to Swearingon's Sporting Goods!)
