I've read 4 books about our current wars and my bottom line is bring them home and just bomb the crap out of any country that harbors them. Just like in Vietnam we have a lot of people dying for other folks' ( that are safe at home) ideals.
Here is a scenario straight from one of the books - you watch a Taliban/Terrorist shoot your buddy, then he drops his gun and puts his hands in the air, you have to take him prisoner, can't tip him over or you will be charged with murder.
Watch a group of armed terrorists run into a house. You have to stand outside and ask them to come out.
We have lost SF boys because they are more worried about being crucified by the American Media than they are about saving their lives.
The last thing I would do today is suggest a young person join the military. And as an old Marine that really makes me sad.
The books:
Lone Survivor - Marcus Luttrell, only survivor of a 4 man SEAL team
No Easy Day - Chris Lyle - SEAL sniper with 160+ kills in Iraq
Into The Fire - Dakota Meyer - USMC Corporal received the Medal Of Honor going to try to save the 4 guys in his team, he couldn't, they died because couldn't get artillery or air support for guys trapped in an ambush, may have hurt a civilian or goat - and the civilians were shooting.
No Easy Day - the death of Bin Laden. The SEAL is in trouble for writing the book, he may give away a secret. Obama had no problem using this to get points with the public with info collected at Gitmo - he wasn't supposed to give out any who/what/where details but I guess it is okay if you want votes.
