Early in the morning I drove to one of my favourite lakes which holds a good population of rainbow trout and large mouth bass. This got me right away in a bit of a pickle. Since I like to fish both species equally, but here in British Columbia the fishing regulations state that you only can take one fishing rod on any waters. After a bit thinking I thought I will give the bass a rest and go after the trout.
I arrived at the lake and it was lightly raining. That much for the weather forecast which promised a sunny mild day. Well, no loss there, a little rain is sometimes the best fishing weather. It brings the fish to the surface to snap up the bugs that fall in the water. It looked like not only I knew that but also every single fish eating bird too. Four bald eagles where circling seamlessly weightless, high in the sky above the water. Just on the other side where the lake turns into a slough stands an old dead oak tree. The perfect treestand set up for the two ospreys that watched every movement on the water surface.
Seagulls with their bone splitting cries swept close in wide curves just over the water surface. Followed by the kamikaze like sky dives of the cormorants penetrating the water surface like arrows shot from a bow only to emerge again with something glittering in their peaks.
All the time my bait lay in the water with not as much as the tiniest ripple visible on the bobber. The trout couldn't care less about my delicious offering of shrimp on a # 4 hook. Who can blame them with an attack from every which direction they found it preferable to hide deep down at the bottom of the lake in one of the many car wreaks, that I am told, have been dumped there many years ago.
I have not taken any fish today yet I have enjoyed myself marveling at predatory birds in flight and a study in the most beautiful colours produced by ducks and geese of every imaginable species dancing in the waves of the lake. Where have they all been when I was hunting ducks and geese so hard all winter?
There will be other days on my favourite lake and there is no doubt in my mind that there will be a day where the trout will take my offerings of fresh shrimp. But not today. Today it was a day for other fishers that need fish more urgently then I do.
