A little trick for y'all when your scale bottoms out like that is to take a stick, 18 inches long with an eye hook 6 inches from one end and eye hooks at each end. Hang the stick from the center Eye and your fish from the short end. Then hook your scale to the long end and pull down. Your acual weight will be twice the reading of the scale. ;D Mark the sick right and you can use it as a ruler also.

Gee Mr. Wizard, I hadn't heard of that trick before.
TT, you're a good man for tossing it back. I don't have that kind of character. Anything under five goes in the skillet and anything over twelve goes on the wall. All of those falling somewhere in between go back in.
If I get to fish regularly I'll haul in one or two big ones a year. It's all luck, but there are some guys that can get them biggun's on the hook with regularity. I don't have those skills, I just cat nto a likely spot and hope anything hits it, but on those really overcast or drizzling days, I float some shiners out along the cattail or lilly pad fields and sit back and wait. Sure enough, if you wait long enough, you're gonna get a hit.
I caught my biggest catfish like that. I thought I had a world record bass on because he fought like a demon. He only weighed nineteen pounds, but it was an absolute monster for me. ;D

The closest thing I've caught to a 15 pounder WAS a catfish. It weighed in about 12. Now I HAVE caught big buffalo fish and cats in the hoop nets that went over 20. but it's not as sporty as a hook and line. Tastes good though..... ;D
