It'll be here sooner than we think! Need recipes (and maybe supervisors/taste testers) for doing a traditional dinner over the campfire...... Unless one of you all has a generator we can borrow for a couple of months.

Well Faith, I wish that I could join ya'll...but that's out of the question..so here is my suggestion..do a "garbage can turkey", instructions are around here some place , tell that hairy old fart that live over ta your way to bring some of his black iron pots if'n ya'll don't got enough and do every thing using coals from the fire...my son's Scout troop used to do a traditional dinner every year including mashed taters, sweet taters, green bean cassarol, stuffing (or dressing if you prefer), apple and pumpkin pies (some times a pecan pie) soup and of course a leafy salad...and homemade bread...with hot apple cider spiked with a cinimmon stick...

You guys going to go ahead and move in without power? Well let me tell you this. Kerosene is above three bucks a gallon and a generator will burn eight to twelve gallons a day depending on efficiency. For that you get from 2KW to 4 (plus) KW not much more. To operate a household you'll need about a 7KW minimum for everything you would expect to have plugged in. I don't have a generator yet but if I did you would be welcome to it. It will be the last thing I buy when the camper is finished. I figure that a half decent one with minimum acceptable characteristics will run around eight hundred dollars, probably a Honda, even though they can be bought brand new for around two hundred. Keep your eyes open at Aldi's, Big Lots and them special trucked in tool sales that happen in the Spring and Fall around county seats. Oh, I think they can be rented at the Rent All here in Athens too. Now as to using iron; no problem! I know you have plenty of firewood.

TT, thanks for the recipe. Guess my noggin is so busy I forgot about you posting it. Oh yea, I should get your package in the mail this coming weekend. Yep, Phil! Plan to move in without power, but with jugged water, and a bucket out back. Will only be for a month or so though. Weather will be cool enough to put perishables in locked coolers outside. Heck, if half the world can do it, so can we. Might even be a good learning experience for the kids. Got to looking at the fireplace situation though. While the thing is set up to actually burn, the firebox is so dinky we wouldn't want to use anything more than 4" across and then only put 2 or 3 sticks on at a time. Which is fine because, as you saw, we have mountains of wood that size. Gonna have to go with a kerosene heater for now. Besides, being the house is all electric, it wouldn't hurt none to have a back up heat/cooking source. I'm sure we'll get by fine. Only one more thing ....where's a recipe?? Or do you plan to just fix it and bring it over???

I operated a 4k generator in the Army. For months that and the portable pot belly stove was all we had and alot of times grateful to have that. Most of the time I was in, a tent was a luxury and barracks was just a rear storage area. You all will do just fine.

Well Faith got her garbage can turkey process and is reaady to go. Anybody going for the Kroger turkey and pop deal? You buy a turkey for forty nine cents a pound and two 24 can bricks of Pepsi product for ten bucks and Pepsi will refund your ten spot! So you can get turkey and pop for cheap! I'm going for it! I figure that forty nine cent a pound turkey is a good deal any time of the year and I think there is room in the freezer. Have not made up my mind for dinner this year. I hate to give up the T-Day left overs but the American Legion is putting a real spread for veterans. My menu calls for fourteen dishes at home or cook all day, eat by myself and store left overs. Or.... eat at the legion, no cooking and no left overs. Decisions decisions! Anyway it is time for recipes so here is one of my favorites: Watergate Salad: 1 cup JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows 1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Pistachio Flavor Instant Pudding & Pie Filling 1 can (20 oz.) DOLE Crushed Pineapple, in juice, undrained 1/2 cup chopped PLANTERS Pecans 1-1/2 cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping COMBINE marshmallows, dry pudding mix, pineapple and pecans in large bowl until well blended. ADD whipped topping; stir gently until well blended. Cover. REFRIGERATE at least 1 hour before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator. Simple enough even the Pastor can do it!

Man I made a killin at Krogers! Before I got done I spent near a hundred and sixty dollars on stuff that was on sale but gets used regular. Then I got into my coupon box and had Fifty Seven Dollars in coupons! On top of that I'll get another $12.00 off my gasoline and still have the ten spot coming back from the turkey/Pepsi deal! Waldorf Salad 1/2 cup chopped, slightly toasted walnuts 1/2 cup celery, thinly sliced 1/2 cup red seedless grapes (if abailable), sliced (or a 1/4 cup of raisins) 1 sweet apple, cored and chopped 3 Tbsp mayonnaise 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice Salt Pepper Lettuce In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise (or yogurt) and the lemon juice. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of fresh ground pepper. Mix in the apple, celery, grapes, and walnuts. Serve on a bed of fresh lettuce. According to the American Century Cookbook, the first Waldorf Salad was created in New York City in 1893, by Oscar Tschirky, the maître d'hôtel of the Waldorf Astoria. The original recipe consisted only of diced red-skinned apples, celery, and mayonnaise. Chopped walnuts were added later to this now American classic. Some prefer their Waldorf salad made with yogurt, instead of mayo. I'm using mayo and a fifty fifty blend of Granny Smith and Gala apples.

Thanks for getting me that turkey method! Got a 27 lb-er thawing out for Wednesday. Then this evening, I got a little ol' 15 lb-er. Will keep the little one froze until we unplug the fridge when we load it. Figure come mid next week, I'll throw that one in the stew pot with some noodles. You all have a great Thanksgiving. Drive safe. If I don't get back on here before we pull out, I'll catch you all later from somewhere over around the new place (if the local library has internet).

Did the Thanksgiving thing last week when all them "Injuns" was here for a little R and R and hunting/fishing. Soooo, I should get out and see if I can get another deer, so I can do a roast, potatoes, etc. It's 3 below right now so I haven't been in any hurry to run outside. The deer should start coming out , to get the sun on their back, in just a little while. Happy Thanksgiving to all, may the Creator smile on the OCC family Lafe

Well I screwed around and finally decided to cook something. I did a small ham, roasted a hen, made the green bean thing(first one ever I burned), pumpkin pie, dressing, noodles, giblet gravy, and corn kernels in honey mustard basil sauce. Sooooo I got my leftovers! So I think I'll drop by Kenny's then the Legion!
