Flat roof?

Yes and it got expanded to 24' x 24' this morning. The non building group( wife and daughters) decided it needed to be wider.
I plan to put plywood and tarpaper on top for the roof but I'm thinking it might make a nice patio up there instead.

A balcony might be nice but you'll need a 6x every four feet in all directions and another crossing joist over them. 3/4 ply is strong enough for your floor/roof as long as you don't get any big snows. Now if you plan on inviting Toby over ....

Snow?! With all the global warming going on?! I'm planning on a 2"x6" every 2' as the joists. Debating going to the sawmill and getting some 1"x6" hemlock to lay across the 2"x6" and before the plywood. Also thinking it would make a nice "game room" up there with walls and a roof.

Aw for Pete's sake! Now if you put up walls and a roof on it you got to put your uprights on a 16 inch center; both levels. You might as well figure out how many windows you need and how wide your overhead door will be. Get your stringers for your stairs cut and order your trusses for your roof. Put in sole plates, sill plates, and set your subfloors on a diagonal for strength and use tongue and groove 5 quarter stock. Screw down the subfloor rather than nail it. Keeps it from squeaking when you sneak in drunk early in themorning. Get treated chipboard for your floor cover underlayment and roof decking. On top of your floor layout 3/8 inch door skins, glued so no nails will poke through your floor. make sure your treated, moisture proof side goes toward the ground on the floor and the sky on the roof. Let me know when I can move in.

LOL! Up at Rickenbacker our Real Property Officer was responsible for the elevator inspections, maintenance schedules, etc. Hell we only had them in the hospital building so no biggie. We worked for the same engineer in the Industrial Engineering branch. "Well Major Dillman that elevator is out again up at the hospital, guess I'll have to call Otis." Says Bob. "Who the hell is Otis and where does he work?" responded the Major not knowing the manufacturer of the system was Otis. Major Dillman was a former OV-10 Forward Air Controller who took too many in the helmet. God rest his soul.

They laid off most of the temps. Temp agency "informed" me I was laid off at noon yesterday. That was "only" 13 hours after I was already laid off. They are a "little" slow I think.
Anyway, the agency has been trying to get me on the phone since yesterday afternoon including calling my family. I was busy and figured I would talk to them when I picked up my paycheck.
Seems when they posted that I was available that several companies wanted me and bidding started at $9. an hour. The final was $1,200. a week which I accepted and I start Monday and get this... back at the company that laid me off 19 months ago and way more then they were paying me as a company employee. Go figure!

Mars, Just a thought on my part.....Be very leery of what a temporary agency says and what they actually deliver. When working for a Temp agency always be looking for something better. I learned that many years ago and my wife in the last 10years.

Thanks for the warning Snake but I worked for the company I start at Monday for almost 4 years and the contract for my services has already been signed by all parties involved. I know exactly how much I will be making and how many hours I must put in to make it and I even got 10 days off in Nov. to go deer hunting in Mi. and In.. Of course they could send me packing at any time but considering the trouble they went to I doubt they will any time soon. The down side is that it is only a temp job and as such no medical insurance. For that reason the job search continues but I'll be more then happy with $1,200. a week in the mean time.

Some of the other temps are not happy about my more then double their pay rate. Oh well. They will get over it or leave. Feels good having "extra" cash in my pockets!
The roof/shelter project is on hold as I gather some materials to continue then find the time. I doubled the use of 4" X 4"'s and have them spaced at 6'. Of course like the other middle 4X4's the added ones are on a concrete slab so I must use angle braces bolted to the boards and via concrete anchors to the slab. That won't be hard work but it takes time to do which I don't have much of.
The pigs went to the butchers this morning. A cool 49 degree morning was perfect for slaughtering the pigs and loading them up for the 40 minute drive. Meghan has never seen me "stick" a farm animal. Just deer. She said the amount of blood from such small animals surprised her. I told her it was nothing compared to a cow or horse. The biggest was around 150 pounds and the runt was probaly not even 50 pounds.
The butcher said I should have kept them for another year and they would have doubled their weight. I couldn't. The dang things had "eaten" the back inside wall of my barn and half the door. They had it so messed up I put them in with the dogs because they kept getting out and tore up the yards.
The dogs tried to team up on the smallest pig but the bigger two came to his defense and a bite to the dogs tails sent them running and they gave the pigs a wide path the last couple of days.

The company fired the temps that had a problem with my wages. Not for that but because they talked to everybody instead of working.
Snow falling today!
