I think that one of you will get the bear...what are you feeding them....I heard Toby saying at one time they were using peanuts.
We do not have that many bear around here and not sure there is a season here, but I know 10 miles from here in WV have hunting season for bear.

We are not feeding or baiting but I do use apples in front of my trailcam to make them stop. We also scatter apple pieces to scent up the place before we go up into the stands. I bite the apples and chew them a few times then spit it out but my daughter just pulls the apples apart. I may go by myself in the morning.

I climbed into my daughters stand about 7am this morning. I chew up my apples and don my camo head net and gloves and sit back for what I thought would be a fruitless morning. About 8:05am I catch a glimpse of movement to my right but after watching a few minutes I figure it was just a leaf moving( dead still this morning) or a small bird. I turn my head back to face forward when I see movement again to the right and this time I know it was black. A minute later a small,150lbs or so, bear becomes visible as it moves from my right heading away and to my left. I watch it and when it gets directly in front of me and about 40 yards away I figure I won't have a chance at this bear. It does confirm for me that there are at least 2 bears using this area. This bear hits the small creek and gets a quick drink then turns and heads right towards me. I take the safety off the crossbow and slowly raise it for a shot as the bear approaches. 40 yards, 35 yards and I have the red dot on what black I can see coming through the brush. 34,33,32,31 then 30 and he's within range.

The bear is 30 yards away.... behind a tree..... and turns right and.... walks off without offering a clear shot.
Nope, I didn't get him but I may be back in the morning. I left my bag of apples and my trailcam.
I used to think it was not in my destiny to get a bear but I am getting closer to it actualy being a reality. ;D

Yep, you are going to get one of them. Maybe the other one is larger? Good Luck....maybe you have bagged it this AM?
Last evening there were many deer in my lawn and I had a meeting and the darn things were everywhere even before dark. My Golden Ret. of 9 mos. was ready to chase the ones in the yard and they were about 25 yds. from us and they justed looked, as if, you do not scare me! ha! She was on a leash. She barked so much that the Beagles come from the barn and looked all around, as if, what is the problem? They do not chase deer but get them on a rabbit trail and they are gone or a couple of the barn cats that they have issues with.

As soon as my daughter gets home from school we will be hitting the woods. I bought several cans of cheap wal-mart dog food. The smell is horrible but it's strong and draws bears better then anything else I know.

My daughter got a crash course on a-hole game wardens. She gets home from school and we head to the other girls house to see if she wants to go. She went to a football game but her father asked to tag along but wouldn't be hunting. On the drive he mentions that the other guy hunting this property got arrested by the game wardens the day before for baiting. We go, oh well and go to our stands. The father climbed into my tree stand and I went and sat on a log behind a tree and my daughter went to her stand. 15 minutes later I hear voices and car doors slam coming from a cabin behind us so I think it's just the cabin owners. A few minutes later I hear people walking across the ridge behind me so I stand and turn expecting to see children. Instead I see a guy in camo and a fully uniformed CO behind him. They walk past me at about 15 yards heading for the stands until I yelled, "I'm over here", which made the 2 of them jump about 2 feet into the air.LOL! They yell out, "state game wardens", to which I YELL back, " I know you are since your in uniform but I don't know about the other guy". The other guy lifts up his shirttail exposing his badge and gun. I told him a badge and gun don't prove a thing and if he wanted me to believe him I needed some ID. By now I recognized the uniformed CO and he recognized me and smiles and says, "I'll vouch for him" and we both smile and the other CO gets mad. Anyway, they check my license and mentioned the area was being baited to which I said we had heard about the other guy. From that point on the camo CO and I didn't get along to good and even my daughter said she heard me yelling at him. This jerk threatened to arrest me because I "knew" the area was baited and hunted it anyway. I told him the other guy who I never met was hunting the other side of the ridge from us and was nowhere near us. He then proceeded to spout nonsense about there is "no set" distance to be hunting from a baited area and since I knew the guy was baiting, where I stopped him and said I didn't know the guy or that he was baiting. To which he replies, you said you heard he got arrested for baiting to which I replied that was all I knew and even that I didn't know if it was true or not. He says he doesn't like my attitude and I told him I didn't like his so we were even. He then asks about the other guy in the stand. I told him he was just observing and wasn't hunting. He says, BS, there isn't anybody coming out here to just sit in the woods. I just tell him to walk over and ask him. He walks over to the tree stand and the other CO stays with me and shakes his head. I tell him I don't blame him for the other guy. The CO gets to the stand and starts yelling at my friend to put his hands up and climb down from the stand. I said, what a moron and the other CO quietly chuckles. Really, how dumb does a person need to be to say put your hands up and climb out of a 10' ladder stand. The walk back to us and the camo CO asks for my friends license and he says he doesn't have one and that he is not hunting. That PO's the CO and he goes off about someone being in the woods during hunting season and not hunting. My friend just shrugs and said so what. He asks him for ID to which he pulls out his FireFighters ID,badge and drivers license which chills the CO out a little. Go figure. Anyway, The CO says he is going to "let me go" but we cannot hunt this area until 10 days AFTER the bait is gone which he informed us was peanut butter that the guy had spread on a tree and they had not removed. I tell him that I would remove the PB so we could hunt the area in time for the juvenile hunt. So we walk down to my daughters stand and the camo CO takes my friend to show him the tree and the other CO checks my daughters license when she gets out of her stand. The daughter and myself have a pleasant talk with the other CO until jerk CO returned and started asking my daughter questions until I stopped him and "informed" him that she was a minor and he needed to back off. The other CO steps in and says I have to leave so WE will be going and apologized for messing up our hunt. We get back to the truck and my daughter says, that one guy was a jerk. I say, yes he was and he is the reason people don't like CO's. She says, yea, I heard you yelling and your face is still beet red and your veins are popping out and I thought you were going to get in a fight with them. I said, maybe but they both had guns and I didn't. She laughed and said since when did a gun or two matter to me and that even then it may only help one of them but not both if I really wanted to hurt them. I just laughed. We are going back tomorrow to remove the peanut butter.

So there's no set distance to determine whether or not you're hunting over bait? That's pretty screwed up! So, if the guy wants to be a prick, he can ticket you and take you to court for the corn I have under my feeders here in Fl? That's dumbasshell!
Sorry Lil Miss Mars had to see the jackass. I prefer kids to have good experiences with the game wardens. It can keep them from going automatically on the defense whenever they see one.
Dad had a visit while turkey hunting many years ago from a game warden who asked if he knew that he was set up within a hundred yards of a corn pile. Dad said no. The warden says well I put it out two weeks ago and if you knew it was there, I'd have had to give you a ticket.
Dad told him it's a good thing he didn't know about the corn because the game warden would look funny walking back to his truck with his ticket book shoved up his a$$!

I told my daughter that from now on we will just drain the liquid off the dog food into a spray bottle during the season. Baiting on private land is legal except if you are hunting and now I guess since there is no distance limit we have to worry about someone we don't know doing something we don't know about within the entire state. Wait to see how much bait I put out next year! The jerk CO tried everything. We didn't have permission to hunt. My friend produced the permission in writing. We were not on the property we had permission for. Until we showed him the very well marked and posted property line. And the best, They had a report that I had killed a bear and was seen loading it into my truck. I told him that I hadn't killed a bear yet and what he could do with his "report". I explained to my daughter that he was saber rattling with that one and was hoping I'd spook.

We got the PB Cleaned up. I don't know why they didn't have the other guy do it or didn't do it themselves except for wanting to write more tickets because for the next 10 days they could ticket anybody hunting the area. Oh well, life goes on and they failed at making people friendly toward them. Even the landowner is PO'd that they were on his property without saying anything to him.

I had written a response and it went poof!! It is not on here? This is terrible....this idiot is trying to make a name for himself and he is only making an Ass out of himself. It seems to be when some have a little authority it goes to their heads and why did the one with this jerk allowed his BS!! You must have to have radar that picks up on everything in the woods plus to detect bait??? How stupid!!! I believe if I were you after the hunting season for bear over. Look into harassment charges against all the Game Wardens that were there. There are many things that needs to be checked out besides bait? Like pouching!! This idiot needs to be given an attitude adjustment for sure!!

I believe the one acting like a jerk is the same CO I ran into above our house when I was fishing about 2 years ago. I posted that incident on here somewhere but it boiled down to his threatening to arrest or cite me because I had a few old kernnels of feed corn in the cracks of the bed of my pickup and he said that was enough evidence of "baiting" on government property and that I had a couple of untagged steel traps that meant(according to him) I was illegaly trapping as well. They left their "business cards" with us and "asked" us to report any poaching or other illegal activity if we see it. I wouldn't before but I sure will not be turning any info over to them in the future and now they PO'd my daughter who is very mad about her hunt being ruined and she will be around years after I'm gone.

Just getting caught up on this thread.
So you're meaning to tell me that if I were to buy an old farm place that happened to have an abandoned orchard or just a crab apple or persimmon tree on it that I can't hunt my place unless I stripped all the fruit off the trees, picked up anything that fell on the ground and haul it all away well before season because it could be considered baiting??
Next time I saw him, I'd stick the barrel of my gun up his piggy nose, cock it, and ask him if he considers my hunting gear as bait, 'cause it sure seems to draw him in everytime.
This douchebag seems to be some anti-gun, anti-hunting undercover agent posing as a CO who is making every underhanded attempt to get hunters out of the woods. Since when was he given autority to mind read and determine what "could have" been meant when the regulations were written. Somebody's gonna find this fella hanging. Sounds like some kind of Wyatte Eyrp wanna be who is really more like Roscoe P Coaltrain.

I wouldn't mind if I got cited or arrested because I did something but to get basicaly, harrassed, because of what someone I don't even know did just got me angry in a heartbeat.
LOL though because I just talked to the landowner and he cornered the CO's yesterday after we left and ripped them a new place to defecate from. He also ask them if the tree trimmings, apple and holly, that he was placing back there would be baiting as well. The answer is that it is not.
Tn. regs are a pain at best. Like baiting. Example, If I have a kernal of corn in my pocket while hunting then I'm baiting. If I pay the farmer to dump his corn crop on the ground at harvest time then that is not baiting.
Or;
If I have an apple tree in my backyard I can hunt around it and it's not baiting. If I put those apples in the front yard and hunt it's illegal.
