Does that mean your happy with your box call? Dadgummit, I bet she'll never forget that big gobbler whipping them decoys! I remember my close calls as much or clearer than any kills I've made. Good memories right there! Good luck in the morning!

She has watched videos of the turkeys beating up decoys but thought of it as more of a stunt then something that happens for real. Now she knows better.
I started calling and he came running, literaly! There's a log that they have to cross on their treks and this bird jumped on top of it, displayed for a second then ran and beat up my jake decoy. You could tell he was one PO'd turkey. She missed the first shot and another tom and the hens took off but he decided to take another swipe at the decoy before he left. She missed again as he was leaving.
We are going back out in the morning before church and try again.

It can be a little frustrating getting some people their first bird. I'm going to be sitting in a blind next week end with my wife (who by the way has botched more shots over the years than I can count) in the hopes of getting her, her first turkey.

Well, get the bird real close, take out the choke, and use a high pelet count, like 8's. Get her a pattern the size of a #3 wash tub and she's bound to hit something, lol!

No birds today. I didn't expect much since we went from temps in the upper 60's to lower 70's to todays high of 43 and cloudy. The kiddie hunt is over and the regular season opens this coming weekend so we will be back out trying to get her a bird.

So um, I hate to open Pandora's Box, BUT, now's is the time I usually ask what we can do to make the call better? Your information will be kept confidential, bla, bla, bla.....LOL Honestly though Mars, is there anything you think needs improving with your calls? I have faith that you'll get that bird for your daughter. I really do.

I know what you mean about misses being more memorable then kills Toby. I've missed some amazing animals over the years. I'll never forget her looking down at the ground when it all was over and sadly saying " his beard almost touched the ground". Then she shook it off and said "maybe next time".

What's really embarrassing about misses is that they usually happen a close range. Every turkey I've missed has been at 10 yards or less

The wife bagged her first turkey this morning. It was a perfect morning. They were gobbling like crazy. I got pretty agressive with my calling and had a big tom strutting across the field toward the decoys and 4 or 5 jakes hanging back at the woodline. The tom strutted back and forth in the decoys spitting and drumming for about a half an hour before I decided the jakes were not going to come in and told my wife to go ahead and shoot. It had spurs a little over an inch long and a thick 6 inch beard. The beard should have been twice as long as it was for the age of the bird. This is the second bird I have taken off of this property with beard rot. Thank you LORD for a wonderful morning.

I got a jake out back this evening. It's the only bird I've seen since last weekend so as they say, a bird in hand is better then 2 in the bush. After I shot and picked up my bird a nieghbor came running down the mountain yelling I was hunting on his property and that was his bird. My daughter came out of the house when I shot and was standing about 30 yards away when he started his cussing rant. When he came up to me and he found out that he was about a foot shorter and lacked about 150 pounds to equal me he then got a little more polite. I told him it was my property but if he wanted the bird that bad he could have it as it wasn't any big deal to me. He said no and we parted ways. When I got to where my daughter was she just smiled and said " he was all mad until he saw how much bigger you are". ;D ;D

Prolly figured he could whip you from distance. Funny how they get polite when they gotta look up at ya! Congratulations on your turkey and congrat's to your Missus, 10scn! I had Brian Warner and his "boy" Matt (i swear that kid can stand flat -footed and piss into the bed of a dump truck...huge!)down for four days of turkey hunting on public lannd here in central, Fl. Between us, we called in six different gobblers, but three of them arrived into range after shooting hours had ended (at 1:00pm) and then two hung up just out of range and were drawn of by live hens. The last spooked when a herd of hogs ran through the palmettos nearby and spooked my sister Chicken; she jumped up scared of a boar hog and scared the crap out of a gobbler that had snuck in to within ten yards of her left shoulder! No birds, but we had a darn good time!

So, you saying Chicken was chicken? Can't blame her none though. A couple of toms and hens where out back just now but I passed. 1. It's the daughters turn to try again. 2. I haven't checked in yesterdays turkey so I can't take another till I do. Which will be in a little bit. You have a 1pm cut off time? We are allowed a half hour before sunrise to sunset. Glad to see you broke that first bird jinx wife of 10scn.

Congrats Mars and good luck on getting your daughter a bird. Thanks Toby, I have been trying for 5 years to get the wife her first bird. I bagged my first bird for the season today. I have to work tomorrow but plan on hunting the rest of the week ending it with the Commanding General's hunt at Ft. Campbell on Saturday.

The angry nieghbor has been running the turkeys off with his 4 wheeler so we haven't been out. We where watching him yesterday and my other nieghbors said that he would quit after the season ended then when the turkeys returned I could shoot one or two, three or how many I wanted. ;D

Make angry neighbor even angrier by reporting him to the game warden for harrassing wildlife! ;D

It wouldn't do any good. Harrassing wildlife is not illegal on private land in Tn. as long as it's your land. That land is the only stretch of private land between mine and the National Forest. It's for sale but at $250,000 for 6 acres it's no wonder it's been up for sale for the last 4 years. The trail ride place up the creek is up for sale as well. I thought about it until I got the details. A remodeled 1 bed,1 bath cabin and 20 year old 9 stall horse barn on 1/2 acre, $100,000.. ;D Not in this lifetime! I would have bought it at $40-$50,000. but won't even think about it at that price.
