Do any of Y'all have one? And what type of slugs or sabots do you shoot the best group with.

I don't have a dedicated "slug gun," but I do have a 20 ga Youth Rem 870 that my wife uses. It has the short 20" smooth barrel that I can fit a rifled chike into. I have a B-Square side-mount scope mount and a fixed 4x Simmons shotgun scope on it. With 2.75" Remington Sabotted Copper Solids (now obsolete) it got about 2" groups at 50 yds. With Federal 3.0" Hi-Shok sabotted slugs it got about 3" 50 yd groups. I fired rifled slugs in it with a modified choke before I got the rifled tube, and the groups were roughly 3" at 50 yds although it's been a long time since I tried it and cannot remember exactly.

Sounds like it shoots pretty good Shiloh. I go to southern Illinois every year Deer hunting and you haft to use shotgun or muzzleloader. What I have is A Harrington & Richardson Model 980 Ultra slug gun with A Leupold Gilmore red dot sight on it. I shoot Federal 3in Barns expander sabotsin it. When i sighted it in a friend had a gun vice and i clamped it down in that and at 100 yards i shot a three shot group that two of the slugs almost went in the same hole and the third one was touching the edge of the hole. There's no way i can do that holding it myself. What they did was take a 10 guage barrel and bored it to 12 ga and it has a fully rifled barrel the thing weighs a ton and i wouldn't want to carry it all day but for stand hunting it does a good job.

I have two slug guns. A Remington 870 in 20ga. and a Mossberg 500 also in 20ga.. I tried 12 gauges but found that they are too unreliable from shot to shot. The 20's seem more stable.

Question? How do you bore 10 ga to 12 ga? I use an 870 12 ga & reload my own. I use Fiocci primed hulls,Fiocci 1 1/8 oz saboted slugs & 34 gr 4756. It gives about 1400fps depending on temp.& 3" @ 50yd full choke. I don't use a slug gun often enuff to warrant a slug bbl, & this works for me. Sorry about not posting . They changed my pain meds from oxycontin to hydromorphone & I didn't think I was capable of making too much sense! Not that I do most of the time anyhoo!! These Fiocci's punch thru a 1600# swamp donkey's water jacket & leave a 2" exit hole! No recovery by anybody using my loads. 4 moose, 3 deer & 3 blackies. So far nobody's hit a shoulder yet even on the bears,so, no recovery & no bone test, but everything seems to react well & all recoveries have been within 30 yd,1 shot. So far so good ;not broken so I'll leave it alone!

Karl they took A 10 ga barrel blank and bored it out to 12 ga which i guess you could call it a bull barrel for a 12 ga. Sounds like that load you have worked up is deadly.

Yumpin Yiminy, did they drill a hole thru the buttstock for an axel & ATV tires? With a bbl lke that you should be able to get 1800 fps & leave lead streaks down the tube!! ;D ;D ;D That's a gun for Da GRIZ, on both ends!! God Bless Lads, I 've never had an undrilled shotgun bbl blank. What a man could do with that!! It should definitely outshoot my Spud Cannon!!

I have a Mossberg 12 Ga. Model 695 slug gun. I shot some Winchester Suprremes for accuracy and they shot a nice cloverleaf group. Next I tried some Lightfield slugs made for fully rifle barrels and they printed a cloverleaf also. Have used Brenneke's in the past but this new technology sure works!

I still like the Foster slugs Remington puts out. Every deer I have shot has been less then one hundred yards so sabots really aren't needed. Did use the Brenneke's but they seemed to have changed over the years and I don't get the accuracy that I used to.

I like the L:ightfiled slugs but too fricking expensive. Most deer shot at with a slug gun is under 100yds most of the time. Even with centerfire rifles, here in the midwest. I think darn near every good brand name slug out there will shoot good nowadays.
I've heard the same thing about Breenke, that they seem to have lost favor beacuse of their accuracy.

Hey DaGriz, have you ever "pinned" a shotgun? Not sure if that's your term. At school, the instructors used that term for the process of drilling through the receiver and into the barrel extension of the removeable barrel shotguns (870 and such). Then, a screw with permanent sealer is threaded through the 2 parts so the barrel effectively becomes permanently attached. This is said to make the gun shoot more consistently and therefore hopefully more accurately.

I see it every year, some people think that a rifled barrel, scope and sabots equal a highpowered rifle and shoot at deer across cornfields. I don't know where people get the information that a 12 ga. sabot makes a 400 yard shot a good thing. I guess from the same people the DNR gets it's information from that thinks a slug going through your house is better then a 30.06 so you can't use the 30.06. Atleast for deer. Squirrels on the other hand you can. Go figure.

Shiloh, Yup I've pinned a few 1100's and 870's in my day . Guys figured they would shoot better but they didn't show much improvement. Slugs have improved dramatically and so have the fully rifled barrels. My Mossberg 695 shoots Lightfirleds and Winchester Supremes inh cloverleaf groups.
State lawmakers amaze me. Can't use centerfire rifles but you can use centerfire handguns, blackpowder and shotguns with slugs. DUH! TC Encore and Contenders in any fricking rifle caliber you want! DUH! Muzzleloaders that shoot better than a lot of centerfires and at higher velocities than a 30/30 ,
What the fluck is wrong witrh these DNR people??

Thanks for the opinion, DaGriz. I've not done it, but have had a few people ask me if I could improve the accuracy of their guns. I had wondered if it really would make a difference. Very few people here in TN use slug guns for hunting. I've only seen a couple of ancient shotguns afield for bear/hogs amongst some old-timers using dogs. I have the Youth 870 20 ga with a scope and rifled choke that I have shot some, but haven't hunted with it. It's my wife's gun, and she rarely hunts.

Went to the range today. I put scopes on both slug guns. One a simons red dot the other a tasco bantam. The bantam is turned all the way up and still shooting low at fifty yards and the red dot still needs tuning but should be OK. I'll make another trip on Friday.

I was not impressed with the scopes. I do better at this point without them. I'm going back Friday. I'll make a decision then.

Shotguns shooting slugs tend to put a world of hurt on any but the very best scopes. The receivers move around a bit during recoil and the scope usually takes the brunt end of it!
