well crap, crap, crap....just got word from the CO that the preserve that boarders part of this property set out 10 feeding stations, feeding the deer 24/7...this is a no-hunt no tresspass area...go figure...there is no way we (the hunters) can compete with these guys...we are allowed to use only so much bait, while these guys can dump tons of food out...wtf...feed stations are advised against by the DEP, but because this is a "nature preserve" they can do just about anything they want...well just wanted to blow a bit of steam....sorry for the rant...

I call this picture - Ground Shrinkage. lol He was chasing a doe in the woods and I grunted him up. I got excited and should have passed him up. I was looking to take a more mature buck but he'll do. Next step is take a few does to help balance the ratio. Paws, What is the ratio on that recipe?

;D ;D ;D Congratulations on everybody's hunting success! Only deer I've seen since last Tuesday was a nice 8-point that was woven into the grill of a logging truck. Not even getting any visits to my feeder or licks.
Sad story from our county during youth season. Happened about 10 miles from here Friday afternoon. A father was taking his 11 yr old son out hunting in the woods right behind their house. Still not sure if the son mistook dad as a deer, or if it was an accidental discharge, but dad was shot dead with one shot to the upper back.
On a side note, I'm gonna pass along a tip for anyone scouting out a new hunting grounds. While you're out looking for rubs, scrapes, turds and paths, check out how much vehicular traffic is in the area. If the area you're looking at only sees one or two vehicles a day, it might be a good idea not to arrive a week early in 9 trucks with 20 drunken buddies on 15 ATV's roaring at all hours of the day and night. Also, think about all the nice bucks you saw on that scouting mission and where they'll be once you spend a week and 200 rounds just to sight in your guns. I love hunting as much as y'all. But let's use some common sense. (Sorry, but all I have to see is a Franklin Co. license plate comin' up our hill and my blood gets boiling. This particular bunch of lame brains should have their hunting license revoked.)

aged the deer at around 4-5 years old...what a lucky bast...er fellow he was....found what looks to be #4 shot in his spine and a old wound channel possibly from a Hp or BP rifle (healed broken ribs right side healed broken left front leg) then when I was cutting down the front left shoulder found healed over broadhead wouind (shoulder blade, it was a round hole with 2 lines leading away from the center at 60 degrees from each other...mechanical I would presume as the were about 1 and a halh inches long)...poor ol' boy met his match on the highway....

Nope, single solid slug only...but that don't stop some idget from blasting away at something...they (COs) popped a NY er just last week deer hunting with 00 Buck... that hasn't been legal in CT for almost 50 yrs....just got done with one of the hind quarters and there was a healed break in the upper bone appearing to be older than any of the others...maybe with his survival rate he felt indestructible...but it was more than likely had had some hot doe tail on his mind when he darted across the road...

Ok. So I've got a real dumb question. Well, maybe not dumb, but more like a what if. Suppose somebody was barreling down the road and hits a deer right in front of your place. According to your deed your property goes out to the centerline of the road. Driver either doesn't want it or takes off. Do you have to check it? (I know personally I wouldn't. Just get it in the house fast, gut it in the bathtub, and make sure it's in the freezer before the neighbor's notice.) But if you legally do have to check it, can you check it in like any other land owner killed deer?

we have to call it in...if they don't come out they give you a tag number and count it as a deer strike..does not go against your hunting tags...the best way to approach this is to call it in then you are safe from being in possession of a untagged game animal. it's always best to be on the safe side..it still depends on were or what state you are located in (I know in Ohio, you can get the free deer strike tag same as in CT...) best to call them and get it...have heard that the ODNR catching some guys that were riding around picking up road kill and not calling them in...they confiscated one fellows property (house, barn and shed, plus the freezer were the meat was being stored...and the truck they were using)..not worth the risk...also know for a fact that in NJ you can't even drag the deer of the side of the road...agin the law to touch, mutilate or alter a deer killed on a road way...

Yeah, call it in. It's easy now to check in deer in Ohio cause they only need to be dragged to the station if you don't have a phone.

No check stations?? Sounds like I better get a new hunting regs book. I didn't get one this season. Sure would be nice if that's so. It's such a pain and waste of time/gas to have to drive to town just so some overworked store cashier can look in the bed of your truck and say "Yep. It's dead. Sign here?"
So, if you normally only hunt and tag as a landowner and do not have a hunting license, you can still just call it in?

Faith, no such a thing down here of taggig or calling in...ya just put 'em in the freezer and enjoy; same as if it were a hunting kill. No tags, no reporting. TT, congrats on the fresh venison!!! My prostaff at www.rebelyelloutdoors.com has had grerat success this year! Donna took a nice fat mule deer buck and photographed moose in Utah s they came in to my scent! Tonya has taken a nice six point buck and recently a 120 pound boar hog as it came in to my scent! Amy hasn't killed, but got a ten pont on trail cam visiting her scent post in front of her treestand while she was away at lunch at 11:50 am, lolol. And myself, I put fresh pork in the freezer. Also, Brian Warner killed a fat Louisiana 9pt he credits to my scent and I have e-mails from a half dozen others who have t aken whitetail and hogs in four different states! I'm loving it!!! ;D ;D ;D
