I've been diagnosed with type II diabetes for several years now, but I've always managed it with oral meds and diet. During my recent hospitalisation, my sugar levels were all over the place and they had to start me on low doses of insulin along with my oral meds.
I'm supposed to followup with my family doctor to get my sugar under control, but I'm notgoing to see him until I straighten it out again via diet. I do NOT want to get on the needle permanently.
So, I'm cutting out the whites. White bread, pasta made with wheat flour, potatoes, white rice, et al and increasing my protein and fiber.
And as soon as my body will allow I'm going to start excercising again. This last month on my back has me feeling soft as a marshmallow...gotta atleaat start taking some short walks again.
I know a bunch of ya'll are battling diabetes also. How's ya'll war on sugar coming along?

In my posts ,I provide recipes you may like to try and ways to lower your sugar....I think there are some tricks I mentioned to at least satisfy some urges.... ...Good luck.

Mine is higher than hell too. Too much pasta, bread, and sweets. Skirting around 270. I stopped the injections of Victoza which was really keeping it down because of the cost. The Actose doesn't seem to be causing any bladder problems but it too is very expensive. Looks like my limits are going to have to be diet and exercise. Those things have gone by the wayside due to boredom with them and a general lack of self discipline. Oh and my give a shit factor is not all that high. Doc says I have had bleeds in both eyes now and need to get it down. He says I'll need cataract surgery in ten years or so as well. Of course if I go blind then I won't.

Toby, if your doctor will allow that four day fast of nada but liquids without sugar and all the celery you care to eat knoks the dog doo doo out of the liver reserves and blood glucose content. Also remember that one gram of fiber reduces the carbohydrates by an equal amount. For me there are two meals that really get all in control. One is a six to eight ounce portion of grilled salmon with a sliced apple, a generous serving of asparagus and a slice of 12 grain bread buttered. The other is a PB and J on 12 grain bread with a half glass of milk. It seems like having my meals at regular times and intervals works the best. For me that is very hard after spending most of my life on one meal a day. Doing two a day is a major accomplishment and three is harder than all get out.

Koot, you bet; I'm scouring over a lot f the old stuff ya got on here. Good info; thanks! Paws, my biggest challenge also is eating regularly. I don't usually do three meals a day and damn sure don't have any set schedule. Big time increasing the fiber...'bout to shit myself to death... And I loaded up on pork rinds, BBQ are damn good snackin' and zero carbs! By the way, I'm down TWO pant sizes... ;D

Toby, thats great....3 squares is important, but if you can, 5 small meals during the day, would even be better....You must learn that its the food that keeps the fires burn and the weight will come down faster...

It'd be so much easier to get them five small meals a days if I had a normal routine I coul follow, but each day sets its own schedule...
Gotta start bringing along some jerky n pork rinds when I go off in the truck and try to snack all day.

Best to scrub the meat and take an apple, carrots, and celery for tween meal snacks if that is what the plan is. Meat has nine calories per ounce, fruit and veggies four or less and burns off in half the time fat and protein burns off. You know how to balance out your meals. You try I'll try, You don't, fug' it, been round long enough anyhow. Done seen everything there is to see.

Sounds good Phil, but the one thing people forget is that fruit contains a gross amount of sugar...Maybe some jerky for the protein protein and a fruit would resolve that mid day crisis.....

Protein doesn't kick in for eight hours sugar starts almost immediately. With fruit you are getting fructose and fiber rather than raw sucrose. Member, every gram of fiber offsets one gram of sugar and a serving of fruit carries only 30 grams of sugar far below the recommended 50 per meal. You got to get eight servings of fruit and veggies a day anyhow and that is tough to do with three meals.

Toby just called me from the ER. He said he had blacked out and couldn't recall much. I guess he was telling TOT about the new planet they discovered in 2009. He said "It is hotter than Earth but is most all water." He said " It is begger than Earth but not as big as Uranus." That's the last thing he can remember.

OK. So I'm sitting here scratching my head. Hoping and praying Toby hasn't taken a turn for the worse. But knowing you Phil, I figure this is a joke (..not as big as Uranus...).

In fact, I got a package from her just yesterday in the mail including a framed 8X10 and a she loves me card... What a gal! ;D Keep it under yer hat though cause TOT an I am just really close friends and Donna gets a bit jealous....

You don't have to be afraid of fruit and veggies, just that processed crap. Fruit juices are OK with caution. You just need to keep score on the mix of various nutrients. (Which is a pain in the ass as you know.) Must be done though. Give them up and you lose the minerals, vitamins and trace elements you need. Replace your calories with proteins from meat and you'll end up in the Cardiologists office. Veggie juice is pretty terrific, expensive but terrific. Juices work real well because for every 8 oz glass you get 2 to 3 servings. I think I'll probably get a juicer. Love hell out of V-8 but getting enough of it is a pain in the wallet. Watch the proteins. Your Proctologist should have told you that. Get more fish too especially them smoked ones you were talking about! Grains like ceereals and bread, whole grains and multi-whole grains . The less processed the better. We got to do a whole lot less biscuits, gravy, and cornbread, stuffings, and meat. I'm thinking about giving up the artificial sweeteners too. Going for raw water, coffee, and unsweetened tea, juices (small amounts) and milk.

Toby, when you mentioned you had two steaks and a tator, or that your going to some pork chops scares me a bit...I will admit to the need for protein, but with that amount of protein comes the calories.... If Phils description of the way sugar from fruits reacts, then I would say one steak, one or two pork chops....The light low carb snacks your eating should keep the hunger pangs to a low roar.....

One thing I learned solidly, "If I'm ravenous, check my sugar". Nine times out of ten it is too high and a drink of water, maybe a small cracker or piece of celery will fix it. If it too low of course then time for some juice, maybe a snack. We got to get serious guys else before we go under; we'll all need caretakers. That means I'm really in trouble. Fug, I don't even have anyone to accept my flag!

Nice site but your paying top dollar to eat something that you may not enjoy due to the sugar substitutes....My wife bought me a box of no sugar candy...It sucked ,but the portion was 3 pieces for a total of 18 mgs sugar...Sounded good so I closed my eyes and made believe it was satisfying..."HOWEVER", I found a similar box of good chocolate with sugars and low and behold, the portion was three pieces with 18mgs sugar...You tell me which way I went...I used to buy a sugar free cookie from "Murrays"....If you can get it, they are tasty and make a number of cookies....The portion again is three cookies at 18mgs...Now, I had been going to a dietician who wanted me to eat 45 carbs per meal....When I tried that, I gained weight so I decided to cut the per meal numbers.....I was able to reduce my intake of carbs by half ,sometimes more and it worked....They took me off insulin , and my numbers all around got better and I lost weight too...I called it tricking my mind.....

Yes there are products out there with real sugar that have better numbers than some of the sugar free stuff and the taste thing is a consideration. With the plenda and Stevia the taste thing has pretty much been overcome but I am still not convinced that worm poop and plants formerly not included in our diets is good for us. Quantity wise and serving size is the thing I have to deal with. A half cup of ice cream or three cookies is a hard thing for me. But the alternative is losing my sight. Self discipline is a real bitch so believe me I know the feeling.
