That might be the case too. Generally around here the only eateries really busy during dinner (supper) time are where the colleges are. The old folk eat around four o'clock, the farmers eat their heavy meals around noon, and the families around five to six and during the week generally at home. Families are out on the weekends for supper around five to six. If a place dolesn't make it on lunch trade they usually go tits up pretty quick. Well I wasted another hour of my waning life this morning. Twenty degrees out but clear, dry and the sun came up pretty quick brightening things up. Cousin was supposed to come into the woods East of me this morning and walk back toward me. He must have forgotten. I did see a fat grey squirrel foraging. Heard another fifty yards or so below and West of me. First squirrel I've seen here in a couple of years. I didn't get cold this morning like the other day. Warm as toast for some reason. On the trek back up the hill though I hit "old age!" Jesus I could hardly make it back to the house. I felt like I had done a four hour work out and all I did was walk a little and stand around looking "highly knowledgeable" for an hour or so. Oh, I did take the safety off twice and got to see a fresh pile of deer BBs! This evening is going to be a different story!

Learned something new today. "Don't eat onion soup for supper the night before you wear long johns!" That blue green-cloud will float over the woods until Jesus returns!

I am so ashamed!
I took Lucas out today to try and get him on his first deer. We sat over a old peach orchard that was overgrown, some weeds were higher than 6 feet. Anyways, my brother had a stand built in an oak tree overlooking this orchard, so up we went. Ever try to get a 9 year old, a 25-06, a .410, a loaded backpack, and a man with a bum right arm up in a tree in the dark? It ain't easy!
About 7 A.M. I saw a deer jump in the weeds, and told Lucas to get ready. As we watched I eventually saw 2 more, and all were about 60 yards out. As we watched, I tried to get Lucas to see them through the scope on the 25-06, but he never could, so I switched him back to the ole single shot .410, shooting rifled slugs. Remember, this is an overgrown field. tall weeds, and old peach trees, so he never could see them clearly.
Finally about 7:40, one stepped out so he could get a shot. It was in a small clearing in the field, and about 40 yards away. I told him to take the shot when he got ready. He shot, and missed! The deer never moved! So I threw up the 25-06 and shot, and saw the deer run off. This was his first ever shot at a deer.
We climbed down about 15 minutes later, and walked over to where the deer had stood. I saw blood, and knew my shot was good, so I told him i wanted him to blood trail it. Good training for later in life, I thought. He followed the blood trail, pointing out the drops to me. I saw the deer down after about 25 yards, but I didn't tell him. I wanted him to find it. When he couldn't find any more blood, I told him to look closer, and then he spotted the deer about 10 feet away.
I tagged it, since I shot it and we drug it out. He drug it the last 30 yards or so by himself and I loaded it in the pickup. We went to check it, and I checked it in as a young doe, and guessing at the weight I would guess maybe 70 lbs. total. I prepared to hang it in the tree and work it up. As I slit the back legs to put mu gimbel in, I noticed a pecker. Yep, I shot a buck that was less than a year old. His testicles had not even dropped yet! And to make matters worse, I tagged it as a doe. All though it was a honest mistake, it is still wrong. I feel bad about shooting this young baby buck, but worse over not checking it in correctly.
But on the bright side, Lucas got to see deer today, take his first shot at one, miss his first deer, and see one killed. So all in all it was a good day even though I messed up.

Hey Preacher, everybody makes mistakes. Just because you are a Preacher doesn't make you any less vulnerable. (Refer to my latest entry in The Study of Matthew; The Duality of the Beattitudes!) Good training for the youngster. I got an earfull of deer walking around but the sucker never would break out of the shrub. I got an area heavy with maple, oak, and walnut saplings growing thick as hay grass where they been laying/bedding. I set on the hilltop with a clear view of the ravine, hilltop and pasture next door. Seemed to be more activity today than the rest of the week. Back at it tomorrow!

I was hoping to get out after a bear this weekend but other things prevailed. Maybe this upcoming weekend. I can hunt during the week but my daughter cannot so I'll wait.

Had a filling last Sunday, It was 80 deg. presser falling wind out of se about 15 mph, but the clock said best time 10.30 am to 12:30 pm. Got my A/C and gun and headed out, got in stand at 10:15 set up fans and set back. at 11:00 set down on the bleat call, was answered by a grunt every ten min. or so I would use the bleat, soon after here would come a grunt. that rascal was bedded down and was not moving; About noon that norther blue in. A empty two leader coke bottle (water bottle) began popping, or shrinking (very good and cheap barometer) saying the presser is rising. I laced a pine tree with buck sent becose that buddy was straight down wind now. 15 min later I cut loose with the bleat call again, No grunt after several trys I saw movement straight down wind Yep it was him a nice 6 point. By the time I got him skinned the temp was 45 deg. Now I put 10 foot section of 5 inch vent pipe out the top of my stand so I'll say it's works, my farts goes up

Be sure to check that squirrels don't build a nest in your vent pipe and plug it up. That gas will build up and accumulate inside that blind and when you go to light your next cig, that outhouse your hunting out of will turn into a roman candle! ;D

You suppose we might get you and Brian to make up a methane operated grunt call with an ahem "mouthpiece" for manual methane collection?

;D Now a little hardware cloth does wonders in keeping them tree rats out, and leaves accorns and pine combs, But I doo have problems with flying squrells, (You get into a stand befor daylight and them babyes take off going mad and you don't know what) ;D ;D Now my neighbor lit his Coleman Heater in his mobel home. turned it on flame, burnt for about a minnit and went out. about ten minnits later he put a match into the heater to relight Thats when it blew ;D the vent pipe went over a hundred feet high and old Leroy across the room and threw a plate glass window. ;D and not a scrach, just could not hear for over a week.

Now it's easy, You put your left leg over your right sholder, put gun over left sholder, use left hand to hold a mirro to aline deer and shoot. ;D Now the gruntcall goes elsewere ;D but make sure its in the vent, about them turkey calls I'm afraid you would get nothing but a POOT

LMAO! ;D You boys are nuts! Brian make that mouthpiece a double reed insert kind of like for an oboe and you'll overcome the size problem! Dove you ought put that whole explosion story over in Dumbest Damned Thing I Ever Did! I'd love to hear it.

Our second and final deer rifle season opens in the morning. I'm not real interested in another deer but I may hunt squirrels and grouse while the daughter deer hunts.
