Porkchop Island is about dead middle of the swamp and called that for all the porkchops that have come from it. Hogs love to hang out there, good fishing, and the Oyster hole is right over there on the western side. Come on down, pull up a stump. Rebait the trott lines on your way by and NO SMOKING around an open jug..... ;D

Nice place Brian!
It was a little tough getting here, but looks like it might be worth the trouble. I rebaited the trot line with deer heart for you and brought in this bucket full of flatheads.
If you'll loan me a swig off of that jug you're toting, I'll get busy skinning these fellers out. Say, you got any of that skeeter dop handy? Sun'll be setting in a couple of more hours and I expect we'll be needing it.
You got a skillet for these catfish?

Sure thing Toby. Theres a Skeeter bush right behind that cypress. Skin some leaves off a branch and grind them up in your hand. Then rub the juice over yourself where the skin is showing. Uh, maybe you oughta skin 2 branches son. Your just about big enough to hunt bear with a switch. ;D I just layed in a mess of coals in the ground pit. We can stick some wild onion, mushrooms and homemade butter in them flatheads, wrap them up in foil and lay them on them coals for a few minutes. Watch that moccasin in the roots of the cypress, He just won't stick his head out long enough for a shot...

Forget it! I'll let the skeeter's bite before I go near that bush! Once Mr. No-shoulders is dead I 'll go, but not while he's pokin' that damn tongue out at me.
Hey, that's some good shine there buddy. You still that out yerself or is that paid for jug? I been without a snort for so long, it really hits the spot.
We get them flatheads out of them coals, I got a sack full of taters in the pirogue I bet we can lay up in them coals. Now if I just had of thought straight, I'd a brought along a couple of cheroots. Nothin' finer than watching the sun set on the bayou with a full belly, a glow on from the shine and drawin' down on a hand rolled cheroot! Easy livin' Brian. I'm glad I got the invite.
Wonder if anybody else'll show up? Hear them frogs strtin' to croak? Did you bring a gig?

Hey ya'll. Is this a private party or can anyone join in? That catfish sure smells good. If ya'll don't mind, I'll brew us up a pot of coffee. That sure will go good with these little cigars I bought. ;D
Ain't the night so peaceful?

I'll have a cup of that coffee preacher and might join you in one of them cigars later. You sure read my mind on them smoke sticks buddy. It sure helps a fella enjoy a quiet evenin', don't it?
Brians out in the pirogue, gonna see about giggin' a sack full of bull's for tomorrows lunch, so set a spell and I'll get ya a plate of them taters and catfish. You, uh...well I uh, preacher, Brian's jug is right over there. If you partake that is. It might put a little boost in ya.
This hear's a nice secluded pot. Them frogs is really trying to outdo all these bug noises out tonight and looky up over top of them cypress trees. You ever see a prettier sky?
Be sure to remind me to thank Ol' Brian for getting us together out here.
Oh, and careful around that tree over there. Brian done spotted a snake he ain't killed yet and there ain't no sense in takin' too many chances around snakes. Especially after the way that one wrecked Adam's good time!
I hear that pirogue comin' in now, I best go see if he needs some help. Holler when that coffee's done perkin'.

Here you go Toby, a nice sack of bullfrogs. Hey, Don't throw out the backs either, I like the meat off the back as well as the legs. Theres some seasoned cornmeal over there by that bush you were scared of. It's cool enough now the moccasin is most likely in the water now. OH and hey, that other sack I better take. I got a few "friends" for that moccasin. You think half a dozen King snakes will be fun for him? HEY PREACHER FREDDIE!!!!! How are my friend? Here, I got a jug of fresh muscadine juice in this jug for you. It's a little tart because Miss Kathy had it frozen from last year and sent it out for us. We also have some nice homemade spagetti sauce she sent but it isn't thawed yet. Y'all don't burn them cypress knees now.... There's some lure makin's in there. Here's a couple skeeter bush limbs for you guys. We'll let them smoke and steam by the fire after you get the leaves off. That'll help drive the bugs off. Wonder when Paws, Bill and the Ol' Koot will show up. I gave them directions. Did I tell you guys left or right at the twisted oak??? If they go left they're going to be awhile. That trail ends at the nudist colony....

Live oak or shag oak?

It's a big ol' red oak Paws. Years ago they say a twister touched down right on top of it and twisted it up like that. Now that your here though, Grab a jug or a cup. The fish is done and the taters are coming on pretty good. Don't wsweat them snakes at the edge of the fire, they're just king snakes or gaurd snakes if you will. They can't hurt us but they like to eat moccasins and rattlers and rats and mice too. Real handy around a camp. Hey what you got tin that there gunny sack?

Hey Brian, Did you tell Paws that the nudist colony was populated by people like Ole Willie? If not, tou better. He might just get the wrong idea. Thanks for the juice. I used to drink harder beverages, but not anymore. About the strongest thing drink now is either Mountain Dew or coffee, but this muscadine juice is a nice change.
What was that big splash i just heard? Could it be a big ole catfish feeding right at dusk? Hmmm, better get my pole. I feel a big fight coming on ;D

How's about passin' over one of them stogies you offered earlier Preacher? Oh man, them's good un's! Lot better'n them stinkers I usually smoke.
Brian, that's a clear sky up yonder, but the wind's shifted and comin' in from the Gulf. We'd best get to buildin' us some kinda lean to just in case. I was thinkin' about cuttin some of them cypress poles from that stand over yonder and..
Uh oh, hang on a minute....there that's a good snake now. What, I don't give a da..uh, shucks (sorry Freddie)..what kinda snake it was. If it sticks it's tongue out at me it's gonna get kilt! Mice nuthin', you let the owls worry about them, ain't no sense in bringin' them no-shoulders into a feller's camp.
Now anyway, pass that jug if you don't mind to and give me your thoughts on that shelter.

Glory be! I knowed you guys would be down here in this swamp. Been looking all over for you. I heered a bunch of them there pork chops rootin roun when I was comin in. What say we go see if we can get us one?
Uh, I'd better have one of them ceegars and maybe a pull offen that there bottle if ya'll don't mind before we head out though. Gots to get my stamina bilt up ya know.
This sure do remind of a time when me and ol Kirby Hill spent a night out. Them big ol skeeters bout carried us away but, we rubbed somma that there skeeter bush on us and glory be it sure did the trick. God sure do have some amazin things out there if we just take the time to find em.
Don't you think so preacher man?

I sure do agree Rich. In fact, sitting here and looking at the evening sky, hearing the sounds of nature, has got me almost ready to burst into song praising the Lord for all His goodness. But, don't worry, I won't sing. My voice isn't as good as it used to be.
Isn't this great? Sitting here, enjoying a good smoke with friends and enjoying the great outdoors. This must be as close to heaven as we can get while here on Earth.

Skeeters is gettin' rough, so I'd best grab up a handful of that bush. Say, fellas? Anybody see where Brian went?
Last I saw of him, he was over there showing Paws them bullfrogs and now he's gone. Heck Paws is missing too?
Ya'll reckon they're up to no good? Knowing them two, ya'll better watch out. I bet they're fixin' to pull some kind of a trick on us.
Rich, if you'll pass that jug on over, I might take me another swig and Preacher, don't hold back on that singin'. Don't matter what a feller's voice sounds like, them words of praise ring awful pretty through these cypress trees.
I'm still worried about that weather though. Wonder where them two's gone of to?

They better not be bringin in any more of them ol snakes. I don't like them critters - at all. But, you can just about bet your last cent that they's up to no good.
What song did you have in mind Freddie. I just happen to have my guitar with me and I know a few of them good ol church songs.
My favorite is "Precious Memories" but if you want to pick it up a little you just cain't beat "Ill Fly Away". That's a good-un for sure.
I guess I like "Precious Memories" cause that was my daddy's favorite one. He used to sing it all the time. If'n we were to sing it a little I'd just about bet we could hear him joinin in.
Uh, Oh here comes them two rascals. We better be careful now.

I like I'll FlY Away too Rich. It was my Grandfathers favorite. But the ones I have in mind are either Amazing Grace or How Great Thou Art. Either one would fit the evening and being in God's creation.
I see those two. Wonder what they have in that there sack? Hey, what ya'll got there?

Sorry guys, Had to set the hog trap. A little corn, a cup full of that strong jug and we'll have pork by morning. Freddie, that box right there beside you has some real greasy, hot slim jims in it. Take a little peice of that and stick it on your fish hook. Just drop it in on the bottom of the creek and leave your bail loose. Mr. Whiskers will be along in a bit and let him have a 3 second run before you set down on him. But hang on tight when you do. Don't sweat the wind Toby. That rope there will raise up the parachute for a shelter. Paws is off in the jon boat running frogs. I was thinking of running the trott lines and crawfish traps. If we ain't careful, we're going to have a good ol' fashioned fish fry and BBq going before long. Hey, did anyone think to bring any ice with them??? We're ok right now but by mid morning we're going to need it. If y'all want, there's a nice watermelon in the cooler too. Been there all day too. I'lkl be back in awhile, I think I will run them traps and trott lines, might even run into them hogs.....Watch for moccasins by the creek, remember, this is mating time for them so you should be able to smell them. You know that musky ol' half rotted fish smell. If y'all want, take that 12 string down and play away. Back in awhile....

Just so happens I brought along my jaw harp and I bet I can keep a steady enough beat if ya'll wanna give one of them tunes a go.
First I better go see about gettin' some wood for that fire. With all the groceries the Lord's allowin' us to pull outta that swamp, Paws is going to need the fuel pile stacked pretty high.
If ya'll can do without the lantern for a little while, I better take it with me. I don't want to slip up on no moccasin's; not even on accident!
I hear Paws polin' in. I better get to gatherin' that wood for him.
Be bed time in a couple of more hours. I hope Briam don't go checkin' that trap till morning. I hate cleaning hogs in the dark.
